We at Jurassic Feeders & Beastly Exotics are THRILLED to finally share the news— We've been chosen to provide the Dinosaurs for the upcoming blockbuster Jurassic World: Rebirth!!! 🎬🦖🦕

That’s right! Spielberg’s team said, “Why settle for CGI when Jurassic Feeders has the real deal!?!?”

So, we’re loading up our T-Rex transport crates, polishing our Velociraptor enclosures, and making sure our herbivores know their lines (they tend to chew the scenery… literally).

Want to meet a movie star? Swing by our shop! For a limited time only, you can reserve your own pet triceratops! (just sign our 800-page waiver) and get a free "Dino Chow" sampke—perfect for your prehistoric pal at home!

JFBE Family!

I wanted to take a quick moment and say, from the bottom of my heart; that I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our incredible patrons, both old and new, and to our small but mighty team for keeping JFBE running smoothly while I had to step away for some very important family medical procedures that have been being done at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore. As I sit here, again, in the waiting room; I can't help but reflect and say how much appreciation we all have of your support, patience, and dedication, which means the world to all of us at JFBE.

Though our early spring plans have been slowed down, rest assured we’ll be back in full force soon! We will be more than ready to make this spring and summer one of JFBE’s best yet! Thank you for being part of our journey. We can’t wait to see you all soon!

Forever Grateful for you all -
Alex 🙂
And the JFBE staff.

When I am scared, I play died like the possums. It works for them. Why not me.

Fun fact

Black Death Feigning Beetle (Asbolus verrucosus & Similar Species)

Habitat & Range

These beetles are native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. They thrive in dry, arid environments like the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts, where they scavenge for food among rocks and sand.

Appearance

Usually black or dark gray with a slightly rough, textured exoskeleton.

Some species have a powdery blue or dusty coating, helping them blend into their surroundings.

They are relatively small, growing about 1–1.5 inches long.

Funny & Unique Behaviors

Feigning Death – When threatened, these beetles "faint" by flipping onto their backs and playing dead. This trick confuses predators, as many animals prefer live prey.

Tough Survivors – They are incredibly hardy and can live several years, much longer than many insects.

Low Maintenance Pets – In the exotic pet trade, they are popular because they are easy to care for, require little water, and are fun to watch.

Hope everyone's is having a good day, but just in case, here's a chinchilla in a hat.
Chinchilla Overview

Chinchillas are small, furry rodents native to the Andes Mountains in South America. They are known for their incredibly soft, dense fur, which helps them survive in the cold, high-altitude regions of Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, and Chile. Because their fur is so thick (each follicle produces about 50–80 hairs), they do not tolerate heat well.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, chinchillas live in rocky, mountainous areas where they hide in crevices and burrows to escape predators like hawks, foxes, and snakes. They are social animals and usually live in colonies called "herds," which can have up to 100 members.

Diet

Chinchillas are herbivores, primarily eating grasses, hay, leaves, and bark. Their diet in captivity consists mainly of high-fiber hay and specially formulated pellets, along with occasional treats like dried herbs or rose hips.

Behavior & Funny Habits

Dust Baths – Instead of bathing in water, chinchillas roll around in volcanic ash or fine dust to keep their fur clean and dry. Water can be harmful to their dense coats, leading to fungal infections. Watching them take a dust bath is both hilarious and adorable!

Jumping & Acrobatics – Chinchillas have powerful back legs and can jump up to six feet in the air. They love hopping around and sometimes do spontaneous "popcorning" jumps when excited.

Nocturnal Shenanigans – Chinchillas are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk). At night, they can be heard bouncing off cage walls, running on wheels, or chirping at each other.

Chewing Machines – Their teeth never stop growing, so they chew constantly to keep them in check. Give them safe wood toys, or they might redesign their enclosure!

Mood Sounds – Chinchillas make a variety of sounds, from happy squeaks and chirps to warning barks if they sense danger. Some even "hum" when content.

Sleeping in Weird Positions – They can sleep curled up, sprawled out, or even standing against the side of their enclosure, making them look like tiny, fluffy contortionists.

Fun Fact

Chinchillas are one of the few animals that can "fur slip" as a defense mechanism—if grabbed by a predator, they can shed a patch of fur to escape, leaving their attacker with a mouthful of fluff!

To all of our awesome peeps and valued friends in and around the Eastern Panhandle,

We hope this post finds you well on this gloomy snowy day. We hope that your beloved animal companions are thriving and doing their best! As much as we love connecting with you guys and sharing the love and passion of the industry with you all. It's one of those times to get serious and transparent with ya'll. We apologize for the length of this post.

First and foremost, we want to express our sincere gratitude for trusting us to provide high-quality feeders for your animals. Your support and loyalty mean the world to us, and we would be nowhere without you. The past 6 years have been amazing working with and growing with everyone in the area!

As a small business dedicated to serving your needs, transparency is one of our core values. It’s important to us that you understand the reasons behind the upcoming changes to our feeder pricing. After much consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the prices on our rodent and some of our insect feeders.

This decision wasn’t made lightly, and we have been putting this off since before Christmas. but it has become necessary for our survival of our future to keep the doors open. It is due to several compounding factors. Some examples of this are:

*Increased Bedding Costs
The price of the bedding we use for our feeder rodents has risen significantly over the past years. High-quality bedding is essential for ensuring the health and comfort of our animals, and we refuse to compromise on this standard.

*Higher Feed Prices
The cost of nutritious feed for our feeders has also climbed. Providing balanced, high-quality nutrition ensures the health of our feeders and, in turn, the health of your pets.

*Supplemental Supply Chain Challenges
The vendors we rely on for supplemental products have increased their prices, impacting our ability to keep costs stable. We have been breaking even on some items for the past few years and putting out more in travel or shipping expenses than we take in.

*Rising Shipping Costs
Shipping fees, both for supplies coming to us and for products going out to you, have risen sharply due to factors like fuel prices and logistical challenges. Every year, shipping and handling have gone up across almost all carriers.

*Increasing Utility Expenses
Year after year, utility costs such as electricity, water, the internet, and other operational necessities continue to rise. These utilities are essential for maintaining the quality and care of every living being in the shop, from the smallest roaches to the biggest Retics we have. As well as effecting the all-around day-to-day operations of our business. Our electric bill alone is 😳😵.

We understand that price increases are always inconvenient, and as we sat by and watched all the other stores raise their prices, we tried to hold it out. But things do not seem to be getting easier or better/cheaper in the USA these days. We deeply regret any financial strain this may cause. Please know that we remain committed to providing the best possible products and services at a fair and highly competitive value to area.

Our promise to you is that we will continue to be transparent about our costs and business operations. We are constantly evaluating ways to absorb as much of these rising costs as possible and exploring efficiencies to minimize the impact on our customers. We love you guys and want to see everyone have happy, healthy animal companions!

Thank you for standing by us through these difficult times and inevitable changes that will go into effect soon. Your understanding and continued support allow us to uphold our commitment to quality and care in everything we do. We couldn't do it without you all.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to listen and work with you to ensure your pets receive the best needs possible.

Warm regards, we love ya'll,
The JFBE family and volunteers
