Tate update 🤍

We had a follow-up with the vet Thursday afternoon, and there are some encouraging signs. Tate is bright, alert, and gaining weight. After everything he’s been through, that is a big win.

His bloodwork still shows concerns, including mild anemia and low platelets. We are now treating for a possible underlying infection with doxycycline for the next 10 days, and we will recheck his bloodwork in two weeks. Our goal is to get his platelets up to 150.

If there is any decline, we will move forward with infectious disease testing. Right now, we are still working to determine the cause.

The vet also shared that what we’re seeing was likely present before his neuter and not caused by the surgery, which gives us some clarity as we move forward.

Tate continues to show us how special he is. The cat we trapped as “feral” now leans into love and attention every chance he gets. He is fighting, and we are fighting right alongside him.

He’s also still loving his freshly cooked chicken liver treats, so of course we’ve stocked up to keep spoiling him a little along the way. 🤍

But we need help.

His care is ongoing, and we have a long way to go to cover his medical bills. We cannot continue this level of care without support.

If you are able to donate, please do. Every dollar goes directly toward Tate’s care and gives him a chance to keep going.

If you’re not able to donate, sharing this post is incredibly important and helps us reach someone who can.

Tate update 🤍

He’s still fighting, and we’re continuing his medications as we head into his next round of testing on Thursday.

Today he enjoyed some fresh chicken livers we cooked just for him, and seeing him have that moment meant everything. We’re holding onto every small win right now.

We still need help covering his care this week. Donations are what allow us to keep going for him right now and move forward with the testing he urgently needs.

If you’re able to help, we truly need it. If not, sharing Tate’s story can help us reach someone who can.

Thank you for being here for him. 🤍

Meet Tate 🤍

Two weeks ago, we trapped a healthy, feral buff male cat as part of a TNR project. He was neutered, vaccinated, and doing exactly what we hope for in these situations.

Then everything changed.

Last Friday morning, he was found lying on his side, unable to use his back legs, with urine covering most of his body. Because he had been in a contained environment, we knew immediately this was something serious.

We rushed him to Critter Care Wellness & Rehabilitation Center and named him Tate on the way, after he let out a little meow as we passed Tate Meatworks…even as we were preparing for the worst.

His temperature was under 90°, his glucose was dangerously low, and he was severely dehydrated. He was in septic shock. The team worked tirelessly throughout the day to stabilize him.

And somewhere in the middle of all of this…Tate decided he isn’t so feral any more.

He leans into pets. He meows for attention. He wants love.

By late afternoon, he was stable enough to transfer to Creature Comforts Animal Emergency Center, where he was monitored overnight and underwent additional testing.

What they found only raised more questions.

Tate has significantly delayed clotting times and may have Hemophilia. His liver enzymes continued to climb even after initial treatment. This is a complicated case, and we are still trying to understand what caused him to crash so suddenly.

He was discharged Saturday with multiple medications and returned to Critter Care Monday for further evaluation.

His next round of testing is scheduled for Thursday, and we need help to continue his care.

Right now, he is stable and responding to his medications, but we know we are not at the end of this road yet.

So far, we have spent $2,079.75 on his care, and we need help continuing his care this week as we work to cover the next phase of diagnostics and treatment.

Your donation helps cover the testing and treatment that’s giving Tate a chance.

If you’re able to help Tate, we truly need it right now. Donations are what allow us to continue his care this week and move forward with the testing he urgently needs.

If you’re not able to donate, sharing his story is one of the most powerful ways you can help us reach someone who can.

The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act becoming law is more than just a legal change-it's a statement about who we choose to be. 🐾🤍💛
For far too long, some of the most unimaginable acts of cruelty were not treated with the seriousness they deserved. Now, those who intentionally harm innocent animals will face real consequences, sending a clear message that this kind of violence will no longer be overlooked.
For the first time, these extreme acts are recognized at the federal level, closing gaps that once allowed cases to slip through the cracks. It's a step toward justice-not just for the animals who have suffered, but for the belief that compassion should always outweigh cruelty. Because how we treat the most defenseless among us says everything about our humanity.
This law may not end all suffering, but it is a powerful reminder that change is possible when people choose to care, to speak up, and to protect those who cannot protect themselves. And sometimes... that's how a better world begins. ♥️🐾

🚨MHKR IN ACTION🚨

A short time ago, MHKR announced its closure and relocation. Even in this season of transition, our dedication and commitment to this community have never wavered. Serving others has always been at the heart of who we are, and because of that fierce determination, we chose to go out with a bang.

When one of the biggest and most heartbreaking situations was brought to our attention, MHKR stepped up. We faced pushback, scrutiny and criticism from unnamed resources within the community. Nonetheless, we pushed forward and did what we do best.

An older gentleman, overwhelmed after suffering multiple strokes and with no family to turn to, found himself facing an impossible situation. His home had become overrun with more than 40 cats, and both he and the animals were in desperate need of help. When others turned away, MHKR became the family he so desperately needed.

Led by a team of absolute ROCK STARS: Amy Coker Pascoe, Ash Truesdale, Crystal Thomas, Kristin Barker, Tonya Erwin Thompson, Melissa Grady, April Williams, Becky Blue, Deborah Heavrin, Dee Tee Cesare-Nelson, Aubrey Dixon and Dr. Dixon of PetCare of Newberry and Laurens County Humane Society, every single cat was fixed, vaccinated, and treated for a variety of illnesses and medical conditions. We are proud to announce all but 4 have found forever homes.

BUT we did not stop with the animals.

Our team poured countless days, hours, and heart into transforming this man’s home. We gutted the house, cleaned out the damage, and worked tirelessly to create a safe, livable space for him once again. Fresh paint, new flooring, and gently used furniture replaced what once seemed beyond saving. What was once on the verge of being condemned is now, once again, a home.

This is rescue.
This is compassion.
This is what community looks like when people refuse to turn their backs.
We may be closing this chapter of MHKR here, but moments like this remind us why we started and why this mission will always continue wherever we go.

Our last request for monetary donations will help MHKR replenish funds and ensure our mission continues.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our country offered something like this?! 🐾😻

Veterinary bills can be especially overwhelming on a fixed income.

Germany has introduced a pilot program that helps senior pet parents afford veterinary care through subsidized pet insurance. The initiative aims to ease financial pressure and reduce the number of pets surrendered due to medical costs.

Officials say the program is designed to help older adults keep their companion animals at home while ensuring pets receive necessary treatment.
