Here's some Mother's Nature Advice for you!

#2 - When it comes to appliances:
Wash most of your laundry in COLD WATER - cold water uses about 90% less energy than hot! If every household in the United States washed four out of five loads in cold water instead of hot - that's the same effect as taking 10 million cars off the road.

10 million cars!

Mother knows best - wash in cold.

And while we are talking laundry - Hang It All
If every U.S. household let just one load of laundry air-dry, it would have the same effect as taking 50,000 cars off the road!

That's 10,050,000 cars and counting!

Healthy Home Tip #8

Are you having difficulty getting a full night of restful Oh So Peaceful sleep?

It may be your furniture!

Any upholstered furniture that's stain resistant probably contains formaldehyde, which is said to cause insomnia. Cheap particleboard furniture is also commonly treated with this chemical.

Simply remove these items from your bedroom.
Take a deep breath.
Sleep well.

Mother's nature advice #1

Did you know that the average household has its lights on in the kitchen more than in any other room in the house?
Install compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) in ALL FIXTURES EXCEPT the one directly over the sink: it will be EXPOSED to STEAM, which ISN'T RECOMMENDED for CFLs.

Now you know!

Healthy Home Tip #7
Eco-Friendly and Oh So Good Smelling Carpet Freshener!

You will need:
2 cups Borax or Baking Soda
1/2 t essential oil
(my favorite is lavender, tea tree is good if you have pets)
Mason Jar with Lid
Nail
Hammer

Then...
mix together Borax and essential oils
poke holes in lid of mason jar with hammer and nail

Sprinkle over carpet, let sit for 15-30mins, then vacuum. Kazam!

Baking soda and Borax are natural deodorizers, the essential oils add a lovely scent. Baking soda or Borax alone is still beneficial in getting out carpet odors.
Don't put too much oil in the mix- you don't want a build up of oil on your carpet!

A good explanation and reminder that "green" cleaning products aren't always green and often still have harmful chemicals. The FDA does not require cleaning products to list all their ingredients on their labels, which means that cleaning products that are listed as "green" or "natural" may still have toxins and harmful chemicals added.

Just another reason why at Squeaky Green we make all our cleaning solutions, to insure we have the cleanest, healthiest and most effective solutions for our clients.

If making your own cleaning solutions is not an option for you, I encourage you to check out GoodGuide - a great online resource and app. They have done all the research for you and have rated products based on their ingredient and production line.

In a recent study of 25 commonly used products claiming to be “green”, “organic” or “natural”, the products tested emitted an average of 17 chemicals each, but only one compound was listed on the label. In all, the 25 products tested emitted a total of 133 different chemicals, about 25 percent of which are classified as toxic or hazardous under federal law, and only 2 of these 133 chemicals were disclosed on the label.
