Tails and Trails Rescue

Tails and Trails Rescue "Saving those that others cast away." We are a 501c3 non-profit rescue out of central Indiana. Our Rescue is an all-volunteer organization. We are NOT a shelter.
(1)

Our dogs are housed in foster homes. Once an applicant is approved for adoption they will meet with the Adoption Coordinator and dog(s) at a designated location. The application process usually takes 24-72 hours, provided references respond. Including an email for references will often speed up the process.

Jimmy came into TTR and, two days later, was off to the Vet Tech Institute for two terms. He returned and was selected to go to Medical Mutts but returned because he wasn't confident enough to go through their program. However, it's important to note that he was friendly and gentle enough to be considered!

Now Jimmy is looking for a FOREVER home, of course, but he could benefit from a FOSTER home where he can learn about life in a home, routine, and someone to trust as he learns to navigate the world.

Quick Jimmy Facts:
Australian Shepherd, 1+ years old, 41lbs, crate trained, good with other dogs and all people (cats unknown), and completely up to date on vetting.
Let us know if you can open your heart and home to this great boy!

Let us know if you have a Jimmy-shaped spot in your life!

FOSTER NEEDED 🐾 Charlie, a long-termer who has been overlooked for 2 years. Why? Because he's a big dude, 89lbs big. And because he's no spring chicken at 7 years old. But he is a real gentle giant. Unless you're a cat. Or another dominant male dog (Charlie should meet any potential canine siblings properly). Charlie needs a nice, calm home with a soft place to lay and lots of pets and snuggles. A fenced-in yard where he can relax and putter around. Do you have a Charlie-shaped spot that could use filling in your home? 🏠

🐾 Think You Can’t Foster? Think Again. (We Need All Kinds.)
Shelters are overflowing, and the reality is simple: fostering saves lives. But if you’re avoiding it because you think you have to sign up for a lifetime commitment or because you "could never give them up," let’s clear some things up.

Fostering isn't one-size-fits-all. There are multiple ways to help, depending on your schedule and your emotional bandwidth.

1. The Short-Term Sitter (Vacation Coverage)
The Job: You step in for a weekend or a week when a long-term foster family has to go out of town.

The Reality: It keeps the dog in a home and out of a stressful shelter environment while their usual humans are away. It’s low-committment, high-reward, and perfect if you have commitment phobia.

2. The Shelter Break Detective
The Job: Taking a long-term shelter dog home for a few days just to let them decompress from the chaotic, noisy kennel environment.

The Reality: You give them some peace and quiet, and in return, you act as our spy. We need to know how they actually act in a home. Are they house-trained? Do they hate the vacuum? Your insights are what we use to build their adoption profiles.

3. The "In It for the Long Haul" MVP
The Job: You take a dog and keep them until they get adopted.

The Reality: You are their bridge to a new life. This means providing stability, taking photos that don't look like mug-shots, giving us personality updates, and dragging them to public meet-and-greets to get them seen.

4. The "Foster Failure"
The Job: You sign up to foster, accidentally fall in love, and decide you’re never letting them leave. You adopt them yourself.

The Reality: Look, we call it a "failure," but it's the only time failing means everyone wins. You get a dog, the dog gets a home, and we get to say "I told you so."

🚨 The bottom line: We don't care how long you can open your doors, we just need you to open them. Whether you have two days or two months, you're saving a life.

BENTLEY was recently returned to us due to family issues, and since we always take our dogs back, we're looking for a foster or forever home for him. Bentley is almost 5 years old; he is house-trained, crate-trained, and walks well on a leash. Since he was surrendered, he's the perfect candidate for someone who has thought about fostering. We'd love to set up a meet and greet with this sweet boy; submit your foster or adoption application today!

Froggy (Flossie) heads to foster! Her new foster mom knew Froggy from her previous home and followed her story. She just couldn't bear the thought of this sweet girl in the rescue center, so she stepped in to help until Froggy finds her permanent home. So if interested, please submit an application to meet Froggy to adopt!

COWBOY'S previous fosterer reached out because she cannot believe this great boy hasn't found his forever home. He does well in a home, he just needs someone to give him a chance!
He's gotten such a bad rep around the rescue regarding his dislike of men that the Foster Coordinator talked her spouse into helping assess his reactivity to males. They got along just fine, no issues greeting men at all. So we should say he "can" be reactive towards men. A home without cats and older kids only please. He likes other dogs (especially the girlies)if introduced properly. A nice fenced in yard would be great, as you can see, Cowboy is rather fond of playing ball. Or if you're the active type, he's ready to go along but needs someone to set boundaries and help him to become confident to know that you are there to keep him safe, and that he can trust you.
As with all fosters, we will supply what he needs, a crate, food and even some toys.
Please let us know if you can help Cowboy over some of his hurdles. And a share is always helpful in our search to find him a foster and eventually a forever home.
