Answer revealed! 🐣➡️🐦 This little chick is a Mourning Dove. 🤍

Mourning Dove chicks stay tucked safely in their simple stick nests until they’re ready to fly, so they’re easy to miss. 🌿✨

A hummingbird can flap its wings anywhere from 50 to 80 times per second. Some species can even exceed 100 wingbeats per second during courtship dives.

That rapid movement is what allows hummingbirds to hover in place, fly backwards, and make quick directional changes that most birds cannot do. Their wings move in a figure-eight pattern, creating lift on both the forward and backward stroke.

All of that speed comes with an incredible energy demand, which is why hummingbirds feed almost constantly on nectar and tiny insects to fuel their metabolism.

What is even more impressive is how that same powerful flight system supports migration. Many hummingbirds travel hundreds or even thousands of miles between breeding and wintering grounds. Some species, like the ruby-throated hummingbird, fly nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico during migration. Their rapid wingbeats and efficient hovering ability help them quickly refuel at flowers along the way, building the energy needed for these long journeys.

So the next time you hear that faint buzzing near a flower or feeder, you are listening to one of the fastest and most endurance-driven flyers in the animal kingdom.

🚨 TOMORROW is Wishlist Wednesday… but a few needs can’t wait. 🚨

We are officially OUT of chlorhexidine for biosecurity, low on budgie food with many budgies currently in our care, and in urgent need of duck crossing signs.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen far too many cars speeding down the road at the rescue this spring, and some of our wild neighbors have paid the price. 💔

If you’d like to help, please check our wishlist today. Every item truly makes a difference. ❤️

We wanted to share a medical update regarding BB and the decisions being made for his care.

After additional exams, blood work revealed that BB is significantly anemic due to heavy parasite loads, and his overall body condition on intake was poor. His keel score was approximately a 2, meaning he was underweight and not yet stable enough for a major surgery.

Because of this, the decision was made to postpone amputating his severely damaged wing for now. While anesthesia always carries risk, birds in compromised condition face an even greater danger during surgery, and we were not confident he would safely survive the procedure at this stage.

Instead, our team shifted focus toward improving BB’s immediate quality of life and stabilizing his health first.

One of the most significant challenges for BB has been his damaged beak. A goose relies on its beak for nearly everything — eating, grooming, preening, exploring, and interacting with the world around them. Without full use of it, even basic daily behaviors become difficult.

Our team has begun testing prototype prosthetic attachments to see what BB can comfortably tolerate and how we can best restore function. Early trials have been encouraging, and allowing him to eat and preen more independently could make an enormous difference both physically and emotionally.

BB has also started a deworming and parasite treatment plan, and we are working to improve his body condition and strength before considering future surgery.

Something we think is important to remember is that rehabilitation is not only about keeping an animal alive.

It is also about restoring dignity, comfort, and autonomy whenever possible.

Wild animals should not have to rely solely on waiting for human handouts in order to survive. Having the ability to eat, groom, and function more naturally again matters — not just medically, but mentally as well.

BB still has a long road ahead, but he is receiving ongoing medical care, careful monitoring, and a team committed to giving him the best possible chance at a safe and comfortable future.

Thank you to everyone who has supported BB and cared about his story. ❤️

Tricky one revealed! 🐣➡️🐦 This little chick is an American Crow! 🖤

Few people ever see baby crows because they stay tucked away in hidden nests high in trees, carefully guarded by their parents.

Even at this stage, you can see a black tone to the skin that will define their adult look. Nature’s little secret-keepers! 🌿✨
