Hi. My name is Henry. Well… it is now. ❤️
I had another name and another life before I came here. I don’t need to talk very much about that life. The little scars on the tips of my ears tell part of the story. When I came to the shelter, I was covered in flea bites, and when I first came home, I was so afraid to go outside that my mom had to carry me.
But something pretty wonderful happened.
I got a new life. And with my new life, I got a new name. I became Henry.
It took me a little while to learn that when I went outside, I was always going to be allowed back in. I learned that there would always be food in my bowl, a warm house waiting for me, and people who weren’t going anywhere.
And let me tell you, being Henry is pretty great. ❤️
I sleep in big soft beds and bury myself in fluffy blankets. I cuddle with my brothers and sisters. I get pieces of chicken when Mom cooks. I have birthday parties and wear ridiculous birthday hats. 😂 I have Christmas sweaters and Christmas presents. I even pose for pictures in a Christmas sleigh, although I’m not sure that part was in my adoption contract.
Most importantly, I know what it feels like to be safe.
I know what it feels like to be wanted.
And I know what it feels like to be completely, ridiculously loved.
So if someone out there happens to recognize me from the life I had before I became Henry, I just wanted you to know how my story turned out.
The scars on my ears are still there. They’re part of where I came from. But they don’t tell you who I am anymore.
I’m Henry now.
I’m the dog who sleeps belly-up because I know I’m safe. I’m the dog who cuddles his family. I’m the dog who gets excited about chicken and believes Mom’s lap belongs exclusively to me. I’m the dog who has birthdays and Christmases and soft blankets and a home.
That old life ended. I became Henry.
And Henry is loved. ❤️🐾
