⚠️ Pet Owners: Know the Signs of New World Screwworm

The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae can infest and feed on living tissue. While livestock and wildlife are most commonly affected, dogs and cats can also be at risk.

Watch for:
- Behavioral changes
- Wounds that continue to grow or won't heal
- Foul-smelling drainage
- Visible eggs or larvae in wounds

Help protect your pets by keeping them on regular preventatives, checking them for wounds, and seeking veterinary care if you notice any concerning symptoms.

Early detection and treatment are critical. If you suspect an infestation, contact your veterinarian immediately.

🐕 🐈 Dogs and cats. Pets are at risk too — and one of the cases confirmed in the current outbreak was a dog. Any break in the skin can attract the fly: bite wounds, scratches, ear infections, hot spots or a fresh spay or neuter incision. Newborn puppies and kittens face the same navel risk as other young animals. Owners should keep wounds clean and covered and watch for sores that worsen, drain or smell foul, along with pets that lick or bite at one spot obsessively.

Whitetail deer. This is where the threat hits closest to home. Texas holds the nation's largest whitetail herd — more than 5 million animals — and the Hill Country sits at the center of it. The screwworm once gutted those herds. Before eradication, biologists and ranchers reported losing as much as 80% of the fawn crop in some areas, and the statewide population was a fraction of today's. Texas deer numbers only climbed past 5 million after the pest was wiped out in 1966.
