As the summer sun shines down, the heat can be tough on our furry friends. They are especially vulnerable during this season, with the extreme temperatures in the city. This summer, it's important for everyone to prioritize heat safety for themselves and for their pets!
While taking in some fresh air and sunlight is essential for our health, heat can be really dangerous for us and our dogs. If you notice your pupper is panting a lot, drooling a ton, or having trouble walking straight, your dog might be experiencing heat stroke. If your dog is showing signs of heat stroke, it's crucial to act fast. Bring them inside to the air conditioning, gently pour cool (not ice cold) water over their body, and rush them to an emergency veterinary clinic. Heat stroke can be deadly and can sneak up on your furry friend in no time, so don't wait around to see if they'll get better on their own.
Here are a few simple tips to help you avoid heat stroke:
βοΈ Keep your pup hydrated by giving them plenty of water before and after walks.
βοΈ Make sure to take plenty of breaks for water and shade when you're outside. It's best to limit your time outside and avoid long walks, especially in the middle of the day when it's hottest.
βοΈ Make sure to keep your furry friend's paws safe by taking them for walks on the grass instead of the pavement. This will help prevent their paws from getting burned.
βοΈ If you have an energetic pup, it's best to schedule outdoor playtime or longer walks for early morning or late evening when it's cooler outside.
βοΈ Before you head out, make sure to check the outside temperature. This is especially important if you have puppies or seniors, or if your dog has a long or layered coat, or a flat face.
βοΈ Before you take your dog in the car, make sure to let the air conditioning run for a few minutes to cool down the car.
βοΈ Lastly, please never leave your dog in the car without the air conditioning running, no matter how short the time. It's important to keep your furry friend safe at all times.
Let's make sure we all stay cool and hydrated during the hot days ahead! πΎ
