Every year around this time, the house gets a little quieter. Kids go back to school, routines shift, and life speeds up again. It's easy for your pet to fall through the cracks.

But here's the thing: August is actually one of the best times to take stock of your pet's health before the year gets away from you. Heat is still a real risk. The behavioral shifts that come with being home alone more can look a lot like illness if you're not watching for them. And any limping, hiding, or change in appetite that you've been meaning to "keep an eye on" for a few weeks? Now is the time to get it looked at.

A few things worth doing this week:

Is their microchip registered and current? If your address or phone number has changed, update it. Takes five minutes. Are their ID tags readable? Tags wear down fast. Check it. Have they had a wellness exam in the last year? If not, call your regular vet this week. Have you noticed anything a little off recently? Don't dismiss it. Here's something that catches a lot of dog owners completely off guard: your dog can go from "a little stiff this morning" to "can't feel their back legs" in a matter of hours.

That's what IVDD does. Intervertebral disc disease. It happens when one of the cushioning discs between your dog's vertebrae ruptures or bulges, and suddenly the spinal cord is under pressure. The nerve signals that tell the legs to move, the bladder to hold, the paws to feel the ground? They start cutting out. Fast.

Here's what to watch for:
🔴 Crying out when you touch their back or pick them up
🔴 Suddenly refusing to jump, use the stairs, or play
🔴 Stumbling, wobbling, or dragging a back leg
🔴 Loss of bladder or bowel control

Summer on Long Island hits different when you've got a furry family member to think about. The heat and humidity together? That combo makes it harder for both dogs AND cats to regulate their body temperature.

A few things we'd love for every pet parent in Huntington and across Suffolk County to keep in mind this July:

🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked car. Ever. Even with the windows cracked.
💧 Fresh water, always. Check it multiple times a day in this heat.
❄️ If you're leaving the house, make sure your A/C is actually working before you go.
🌳 Avoid walks during peak heat hours (10am–4pm). Early morning or evening is so much better.
🏠 Indoor cats aren't automatically safe. A power outage on a 95-degree day is a real emergency.

Most people don't think of heat stroke as a cat problem. But it absolutely is.

Cats can't sweat the way we do. When the temperature spikes and they can't escape the heat, their internal temp can rise fast. And once it does, organs start taking damage. Brain. Kidneys. Heart. It can happen shockingly quickly.

Here are the signs to watch for this summer:
🔴 Panting (cats almost never pant normally)
🔴 Heavy drooling or bright red gums
🔴 Stumbling, weakness, or collapse
🔴 Vomiting or seizures

Even indoor cats are at risk if your A/C goes out during a heat wave. Don't assume "they'll find a cool spot." Check on them.

If you see any of these signs, don't wait it out. Move them to a cool space, apply cool (not ice cold) damp towels to their paws and belly, and get to an emergency vet immediately.

Meet Pepper, a sweet Cattle Dog who came to us after suddenly losing the ability to use his hind legs. After advanced diagnostics, including an MRI, Pepper underwent a hemilaminectomy performed by Board-Certified Surgeon, Dr. Puccio, to relieve compression on his spinal cord.

Pepper spent five days in the hospital with our surgery and emergency teams receiving around-the-clock monitoring, pain management, and supportive care.

Thanks to his dedicated medical team, his incredible spirit, and the commitment of his family, Pepper is now continuing his recovery at home.

Before you toss your dog something off the grill this weekend, save this. Some of what's on your plate is totally fine for them. Some of it can land them in our ER.

Here's the quick version:

✅ GREEN LIGHT (in moderation, prepared plain):
Watermelon (no seeds or rind), blueberries, cucumber, banana, plain cooked chicken or lean beef, scrambled eggs with nothing added.

🚫 RED LIGHT (keep these far away):
Grapes and raisins: even a small amount can cause sudden kidney failure.
Onions and garlic: damages red blood cells. Often hidden in burger seasoning.
Corn on the cob: the cob doesn't digest. It causes intestinal blockages that need emergency surgery.
Cooked bones: they splinter and can tear through your dog's digestive tract.
Chocolate, avocado, alcohol: all toxic. Not "a little toxic." Just toxic.

And a special campfire warning: if you're doing s'mores this summer, keep your dog away from the fire circle entirely. Hot marshmallows can cause severe mouth burns, and many sugar-free marshmallows contain xylitol, which can trigger seizures and liver failure.
