Raising a puppy while working a full-time job can feel overwhelming, but your puppy doesn’t need constant entertainment or attention. They need consistency, appropriate outlets, and opportunities to learn how to relax and be independent.

These are more of my tips as a certified professional dog trainer for working puppy parents.

Working full-time and raising a puppy? You can absolutely do both!

Puppies don’t need you home 24/7, but they do need a plan. From creating a consistent routine and providing appropriate enrichment to planning potty breaks and teaching your puppy how to settle independently, these tips can make life with a puppy and a full-time job SO much easier.

As a certified professional dog trainer, these are some of the things I recommend to puppy parents who work full-time.

Brewer Graduated! 🎓

We are SO proud of how far this family has come throughout their training journey, and even more proud of the impact it’s had on their everyday life.

Together, we worked through leash skills, reactivity, manners, jumping during meet and greets, building a solid place cue, and finding appropriate outlets for Brewer’s natural herding instincts.

But the biggest win isn’t just what Brewer learned. It’s the confidence his family has gained in handling him and the ability to enjoy more of life together without constantly worrying about what he’s going to do next.

And that has become even more important because Brewer recently became a BIG BROTHER to a new baby in the family! đŸ„č

After all of their hard work, Brewer’s family can feel more prepared and confident navigating this new chapter with him. He has the skills to settle, listen, make better choices, and be included in their growing family.

We are so proud of this family and everything they’ve accomplished together. Congratulations, Brewer! đŸŽ“đŸŸ

Puppyhood comes with a LOT of advice, and some of it makes new puppy parents feel like they’re already doing everything wrong.

You don’t need to have a perfectly trained puppy. You don’t need to expose them to everything immediately. You don’t need to constantly entertain or tire them out.

Focus on the basics: meet their needs, prioritize sleep, manage their environment, build positive experiences, reward the behaviors you like, and give them time to adjust.

Your puppy is learning how to be a dog in a human world. They’re going to make mistakes. That’s okay.

I’m actually really impressed with the BARK Lickster. Rocky took over an hour and 15 minutes to finish it, which is crazy because most enrichment toys only keep him busy for 10 to 15 minutes. This one actually gave him something to work on for a long time, and it seems really durable so far too, especially for a super chewer like him. Definitely one we’ll be using a lot!
