I belong to many French Bulldog pages, the conversation in them is always how on earth can anyone neglect a Frenchie? How on earth does a French Bulldog end up as a stray? How on earth is an expensive dog like that in a shelter?
I am here to inform you the tide has turned, this breed that I love so very much has been destroyed.
What do I mean by that? It's been destroyed due to popularity. No breed can survive popularity without this outcome, it happened years ago with St. Bernards in the movie Beethoven, it happened to Dalmatians with 101 Dalmatians, it happened to Chihuahua's with Taco Bell.
French Bulldogs won first place in Westminster in 2023, they are literally everywhere on commercials and any paper advertising.
A breed becoming popular is never a good thing for the breed, the public sees it and points and wants it, no consideration to where you are getting your French Bulldog from, the puppy mills rubbed their hands together and counted their money flying in the door, while the mama and daddy Frenchies suffered in the dark in silence churning out the demand for highly sought after French Bulldogs, people were selling them for 5 and 6k and the public was paying it. Now they sell at an auction for 100 or 200 bucks, no more are they the "it" dog.
This girl was simply discarded as her owners were "moving away" so they handed her off to the neighbor and drove away.
This story is commonplace, literally every single day, several times a day we are informed of a Frenchie in a shelter nearby.
They are not a rare commodity, they are not an expensive dog, they are a dime a dozen, and tossed away like trash.
We are doing the best we can with keeping up, but in addition to all of this, we hardly ever get applications for them anymore, they are just as easy to place as a mixed breed dog anymore, and believe me that is not easy.
We are doing our best, as is all of the other French Bulldog rescues, but these are trying times to say the least.
