A Tribute to the Lusitano Breed 💛

We’re back — and what better way to return than with Tributo WL, a true tribute in every sense of the word!

So much has been happening both behind the scenes and in the spotlight here at Wasatch, and while we may be fashionably late, we can’t wait to catch you up on all the exciting news.

Let’s start with this golden boy: Tributo WL, our breathtaking 2-year-old cremello c**t by Principe SS and out of Ostra WL (by Adido Interagro). The very first foal by Principe, and what a statement he makes! With powerful movements, elegant expression, and a presence well beyond his years, Tributo lives up to his name — honoring both his sire and the noble Lusitano breed with his overall quality.

Quadra’s Special Visit 🐴

Earlier this year, our lovely bay mare Quadra (Adido Interagro × Laica, by Violino SS) found her forever home — but she stayed with us a little longer to begin her training journey under the saddle of . This week, she received a heartwarming visit from her new owner, Callie Moss, who visited us to check on Quadra’s proggress before taking her home!

Quadra is one of those rare, steady-minded mares with a calm, focused attitude and beautifully rhythmic, comfortable gaits. Whether it’s for dressage work or relaxing hacks, she’s going to be a fantastic partner. She has in the meantime departed to her new home. We’re so happy to see such a promising match between horse and rider, and can’t wait to hear about their adventures together!

Did you miss us? 🐴✨

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind! Our team headed to Florida with a few of our horses for training, while back home we dedicated time to capturing stunning new photos of our horses and farm. Amidst it all, we welcomed beautiful new foals, shared special moments with visiting clients and friends, and saw some of our horses off to amazing new homes.

Now that we’ve crossed this busy river, we’re back on track and excited to show you what’s next at Wasatch Lusitanos. Stay tuned — and stay with us! 💛

Our Horses Are Finding New Homes Faster Than Ever! 🐎✨

Today we announce that our stunning grey Lusitano, Oceano WL — a horse as deep-hearted and beautiful as his name suggests — has left our stables. 🌊

“Oceano” means Ocean in Portuguese, and he truly reflects all the finest qualities of the Lusitano breed: noble character, willing temperament, and natural talent.

We’re confident he’ll bring endless joy to his new riding partner — and we wish Daniela Morse an ocean of happy rides ahead! 💙 We have more to tell about this special and newly founded horse-rider partnership so stay tuned!

Meet Paladin and Mansur: two of our most advanced horses, with impeccable minds under saddle. They’ve already proven themselves at the Conference at Ocala’s , with our golden Paladin taking one of the top spots of his class and Mansur shining in dressage and working equitation.

Happy Easter Weekend from All of Us at Wasatch Lusitanos 🐴

As spring brings new life and light, we’re taking this Easter weekend to slow down and enjoy the simple joys — time with family, fresh air, and of course, our beloved horses.

We wish all our friends, followers, and fellow horse lovers a peaceful and joyful holiday filled with love, laughter, and maybe a few nose kisses from your favorite four-legged companions.

Jocosa – Our Golden Matriarch 💛

Jocosa was one of the very first horses we imported from Portugal back in 2018, and she has truly become a factory of golden foals! Out of the six foals she’s produced for us so far, four have been stunning buckskins — and impressively, all from different sires.

Among her remarkable offspring are Ostra WL (whose own filly was just born last week!), the very promising Real WL, Samarth WL, and our already graded stallion Paladin WL.

Jocosa is a beautifully typical Lusitano broodmare — full of quality, with a fantastic temperament and exceptional balance, traits she consistently passes on to her progeny.

“Our Goodbyes are Your New Beginnings”

“As breeders, it’s always a bittersweet mix of pride and sadness when we see our horses leave for their new homes. We can’t keep them all - after all, our work and our passion is to breed great Lusitanos for us but mostly for you - but they’ve been a part of our everyday life at Wasatch, and we’ve cared for them from the moment they were in their dam’s womb all the way to becoming strong, grown horses.

Earlier this year, our golden gem Polaris WL (Impar SS x Iris SS), left for a new home and is now grazing in Eugene ORL pastures. Our young bay beauty Sarek WL (Adido Int x Morena), will also be heading out eventually, but he’s staying a little longer at Wasatch to finish growing into his bones and to start training under the saddle of .

We wish their new owners M-R Lusitanos the best of luck and look forward to following their progress! If you’re interested in learning more about some of the newly available Lusitanos, don’t hesitate to reach out!”

Hello, Spring! 🌸

Spring is an exciting time at Studfarms in the northern hemisphere—when most foals are born and plans for the next generation come to life. So far, we’ve welcomed 4 “winter babies” from 3 different stallions, and we couldn’t be happier with their progress. We’re also eagerly anticipating the births over the next 3 months and planning the right pairings for 2026! 🌱✨

While the mares’ herd thrives and welcomes the newborns in its pasture, our 1, 2, and 3-year-old c**ts are soaking up the sunshine and enjoying playtime with their peers in their separate paddocks. Meanwhile, their older siblings are hard at work, training indoors under our team’s guidance to become future elite sport horses. For our 4-year-olds, March is also especially exciting—it’s when they receive the WL brand!

The birth of WL brand.

In the Lusitano breed, it’s tradition to mark horses with the breeder’s brand. It was once essential for identifying a horse’s origin and quality, to the point that in Portugal, the phrase “does it have a brand?” became synonymous with asking if the horse had a pedigree and/or if the breeder considered it worthy of representing the stud. Lusitano horses are traditionally branded on the right thigh, unlike crossbreeds and most other breeds, including the Pure Spanish Horse (PRE), which are typically branded on the left side.

Today, branding is still an important form of identification and a meaningful tradition in our breed. Wasatch Lusitanos (WL) started in Park City, Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains, but as our herd grew, we moved to Petersburg, Tennessee, where Sheri’s family has farmed for generations.

Our brand went through a redesign after our first submission was rejected for being too similar to another. The final “W” and “L” combination was created through an online logo contest!

The first filly of the year is here!

The foaling season is just getting started, and the third full moon of the year has brought us our first filly. She’s out of Opus MAC and Jaca (who’s out of Riopele, a 5-star merit stallion for the breed and a 4-star recommended stallion for dressage). We’re excited to see her represent the breed proudly here on the American continent.

Jaca was one of the first mares we imported from Portugal, chosen for her incredible balance and uphill, powerful gaits. She’s also the dam of Salsa WL, our Gold Medal 3YO and Reserve Female Champion from last year’s Ocala lusitano conference. Opus MAC is the half-brother of the incredible Ofensor MAC, who received so much praise in one of our recent posts, and these photos show him posing in Portugal at 3 years of age.

We take great care in choosing the right matches and ensuring our foals receive the best treatment from birth. Our team is already keeping a close eye on her—and all of our other foals—and we can’t wait to share their progress with you!
