He saw our vet yesterday
Of course he’s Heartworm positive
So he’s on his antibiotic medication as well as his ProHeart12 injection to give him one full year of prevention for it to start working on weakening the worms.

He was neutered and all vaccinated.
On NexGARD for flea and ticks.

His foster mom is keeping us updated on him. Last night she said he slept in the bed with her and she slept great with him laying his big ole head on her chest. And he slept great as well.

Nothing better than saving a dogs life that was chained and now free.

🌈🐾 IN LOVING MEMORY OF KERMIT — A LITTLE OLD MAN WHO DESERVED SO MUCH MORE 💔

10 Years Old | Forever Loved | Saving Pups of Texas

Today, our hearts are completely shattered. 💔

It is with overwhelming sadness and tears that we share the heartbreaking news that our precious Kermit crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning.

Just last week, Saving Pups of Texas rescued this sweet 10-year-old 12 lb senior gentleman from one of our local animal shelters.

We knew Kermit needed saving.

What we didn’t know was just how desperately sick his little body had been for so long.

When we rescued Kermit, we made him a promise. He would never again have to wonder if someone cared about him. He would receive the medical attention, comfort, kindness, and love that every dog deserves.

And we kept that promise. ❤️

Kermit was suffering from severe heartworm disease, a devastating condition that had already placed tremendous strain on his heart, lungs, and other organs.

He developed bronchitis, which progressed to severe pneumonia. Yesterday, his veterinarian discovered that his heart was enlarged and that he had fluid in his lungs. We immediately began additional medications to support his heart and help remove the fluid.

We were doing everything possible to give this precious boy a fighting chance.

But early this morning, something changed.

Kermit wasn’t acting like himself. His breathing was different, and for the very first time, he hadn’t touched his dinner.

I knew something was terribly wrong.

I immediately called the emergency hospital and rushed him there.

The moment we arrived, the emergency team took Kermit from my car and placed him on oxygen.

His bloodwork revealed devastating news.

His white blood cell count was dangerously low. His kidneys and liver were beginning to fail. His pneumonia was severe, and he had developed sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection.

His little body was fighting a battle far greater than any of us had realized. 💔

Despite everything, we weren’t ready to give up on him.

We authorized 48 hours of intensive emergency care, hoping that oxygen, IV antibiotics, medications, and round-the-clock treatment might give him the opportunity to recover.

We wanted to give Kermit every possible chance.

But after approximately four hours in the emergency hospital, Kermit began having seizures.

His little body was shutting down.

The veterinarian called immediately.

And then came the decision that every rescuer dreads.

We could continue asking his exhausted body to fight, or we could give him one final gift.

The gift of peace.

With broken hearts, we made the compassionate decision to let our sweet Kermit go peacefully.

He had fought long enough. 💔🌈

What makes this even more heartbreaking is that Kermit was such a happy, sweet little gentleman.

He loved having his very own room, a soft place to sleep, delicious canned food, and his special goat’s milk.

He loved being cared for.

He loved knowing someone was there for him.

And despite how terribly sick he was on the inside, he showed us so much sweetness and gratitude.

He finally knew what it felt like to be someone’s priority.

And there was something else that made Kermit’s story especially precious.

He had someone waiting for him.

Josh was going to be Kermit’s daddy.

I would tell Kermit that he had a daddy waiting for him when he got better. That he only had to stay with me for a little while longer while we helped him recover.

He had a future waiting for him.

A family.

A home.

A daddy who was ready to love him.

And that is one of the hardest parts of losing him.

Kermit was so close to the beautiful life he deserved.

Josh, our hearts are with you. Thank you for opening your heart to this sweet senior boy and being willing to give him the forever home he so desperately deserved.

Although Kermit never got to make that journey home, please know that he was loved. He mattered. And he had someone waiting for him.

That is something no shelter record or medical report can ever take away.

🐾 PLEASE, LET KERMIT’S STORY BE A REMINDER ABOUT HEARTWORM PREVENTION.

Heartworm disease is not something to take lightly.

It is a serious, potentially fatal disease that can cause permanent damage to a dog’s heart, lungs, and blood vessels.

And the most heartbreaking part?

Heartworm disease is preventable.

A consistent, veterinarian-recommended heartworm prevention program can spare dogs from this devastating disease.

We don’t know everything about Kermit’s previous life. We don’t know how long he suffered without the medical care he needed.

But we do know that by the time he reached us, his body had already endured tremendous damage.

Please don’t wait until your dog is coughing, struggling to breathe, or showing signs of illness.

Have your dogs tested. Keep them on heartworm prevention year-round. Take their health seriously.

Because sometimes, by the time they show us how sick they really are, the damage is already devastating.

If sharing Kermit’s story helps even one family understand the importance of heartworm prevention, then his life will continue making a difference.

I am so sorry we couldn’t get to you sooner.

I am so sorry your little body had to endure so much.

I wish we had been given more time.

More mornings.

More special meals.

More opportunities to show you just how wonderful life could be.

But I am so thankful we found you.

Thankful you didn’t spend your final days alone in a shelter.

Thankful you had your own room, your own bed, good food, medical care, and people who loved you.

And thankful that when your body could no longer fight, we were there to make sure you didn’t have to suffer any longer.

We may not have been able to save your life, sweet boy, but we were able to give you love, dignity, comfort, and peace.

And sometimes, in rescue, that is the final and most important promise we can keep.

No more struggling to breathe.

No more sickness.

No more pain.

Just sunshine, soft grass, and all the love your beautiful soul deserves.

You were only with us for almost two short weeks.

But you will be loved and remembered for a lifetime.

Kermit had his follow up vet appointment today. He’s still coughing even though he seems to feel fine.
I thought antibiotics and steroids would have made him better by now.

X-rays taken
Fluid in his lungs
Enlarged heart
( most likely from heartworm disease)

Vetmedin prescribed for the rest of his life. This will help his heart hopefully stay the same size, not get any larger.
Diuretics given as well.

She thinks this is why he is still coughing. The fluid in his lungs from
his heart not being able to pump enough.
Hopefully this will help him feel better soon.

He is not neutered and high heartworm positive. But due to all of the above,
he is most likely not able to go under anesthesia for a neuter or survive fast kill heartworm treatment.

So we will continue to treat Kermit the best we can. At least now we can try these meds and help him feel better and stop from getting worse.

Oliver is still a young Labradoodle, so he has that wonderful combination of intelligence, curiosity, affection, and youthful enthusiasm.

He will do especially well with a family that understands canine body language and knows when to offer affection and when to give him a little personal space. For example, belly rubs can sometimes become overstimulating for him, so respecting his cues helps keep interactions enjoyable.

🐶 What About Other Dogs, Cats & Children?

Oliver has individual preferences when it comes to other dogs, so thoughtful introductions are important. He will benefit from slow, structured introductions and time to become comfortable with any potential canine housemates.

Around cats, Oliver has shown appropriate curiosity and moderate interest without demonstrating a strong prey response. As with any new animal introduction, supervision and a gradual adjustment period are recommended.

Because Oliver is still maturing and learning to manage his youthful excitement, we recommend a home with children ages 5 and older who can respect his boundaries and interact appropriately with him.

This poor boy was either dumped, abandoned or tossed out like trash.

He is safe and in good hands.
His eyes are cloudy and he’s so matted.
Missing teeth

He will see our vet this week to get all checked out. And probably scheduled for a dental and neuter if not already neutered. Hopefully heartworm test will be negative. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
We have 5 heartworm positive dogs going thru heartworm treatment.

3 that just completed their treatment.

You know we love updates from our Saving Pups of Texas Adoptive Families. ❤️🩷🐶🐾🐈

Here’s an update we just got on our rescue pup Oreo that was adopted last Spring.

It’s been awhile, but wanted to give you all another Oreo/Edie update - she is loving New York and we are ready for Halloween!!

I seriously can’t thank you both enough for bringing this sweet girl into my life. I love her so so much and feel so lucky she’s my little baby🐶

She has been all over the city in her little sling - even on the subway!!
