As a dog handler you have one job, to engage in mutual delight in your relationship with your dog. We use scientific, non-aversive training methods to establish trust, communication, cooperation and conflict resolution. The Good Dog is a family business run by Kate and Ellis Gugel. Kate has a B.A. in Psychology with an emphasis in development and learning from Western Washington University. Elli

s has a B.S. in Canine Studies with an emphasis in behavior from Bergin University. We are your average Alaskan people with two kids and two dogs, "Bill" and "Karen". We are avid outdoorsmen. When we are not running The Good Dog, we spend our hours adventuring and playing in our great state. Our goal is to assist our clients to develop the skills required to modify problem behaviors by altering their environment as is required for long term success, and to fill the behavioral niche with positive alternatives. We strive to use simple, real-world techniques to empower normal people to live a normal life with a good dog. We address your dog's emotional experience as the underlying motivator for their behavior, and work to empower dogs with alternative healthy coping mechanisms rather than attempting to suppress the problem behavior. We work with handlers to help create an environment that makes calm and rational behavior normal.

Happy November!

As of 11/18/25, Ellis and I are re-opening The Good Dog for the Winter. I have sent emails to our regular clients we were working with last year already to give them a chance to schedule first. (If that's you, go check your email!)

I will open up scheduling to everyone else who has messaged me over the summer and fall when I have our regulars taken care of. We will only be running 4 sessions a week right now, so FCFS.

Sorry for the tear-jerker but there were four-legged heroes that day as well.

When the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11, nearly 10,000 rescue workers joined in the efforts. Over 300 of those heroes were dogs.

Hi Guys!! It's been a long time but what feels like a VERY short summer, anyone else?

I just wanted to pop on here and say hello, and let everyone know that we will be back to scheduling sessions as soon as Ellis gets back from fishing. He is playing the long game this year and may be out until as late as the end of September/Early October.

Please make sure to like and follow to see updates on when we will start scheduling sessions. They will fill up quickly, so we hope to see you guys and your doggos very soon!!

Hello everyone! I am finally back to scheduling for The Good Dog. We got a bit later of a start than anticipated. Unfortunately, my mother passed away while we were fishing, so this fall has been spent tying up loose ends there, going to her memorial service, etc. So I appreciate your patience.

We are starting to transition away from running The Good Dog, as life has provided us with better, more sustainable, opportunities. However we do want to keep a very minimal schedule for people who truly still need us.
