PHISHING SCAM WARNING
This morning, I (Dee) received a text message from an international client saying the IRS had contacted him and left a voice mail with a phone number demanding an immediate return call. Thankfully, he had to sense to call me first.
I called the number back for him and got a cheerful guy saying, "IRS Criminal Investigations Division".
Red Flags:
1. The IRS CI does not call your mobile number and make demands as a first contact tactic. That just isn't how it works.
2. The IRS does not have secretaries to answer each call on the first ring.
3. The IRS doesn't call at all, unless they have sent multiple notices by mail first.
4. *If* an IRS agent does call, he will immediately identify himself by last name and identification number.
Don't get scammed. Stay informed, and when in doubt, call your accountant first.
