Houston Chow Chow Connection

Houston Chow Chow Connection Succeeding in meeting the hopes and dreams of potential adopters by matching them with chow chows in need of new forever homes. We ended 2023 saving 152!

Houston Chow Chow Connection is a collaborative of dog lovers and rescuers that dedicate their time, efforts and talents toward helping rescue Chow Chows in need. We are an entirely volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) organization with no administrative costs. Our rescue traces its origin back several years to the work of Dianne Watson. Dianne dedicated much of her young life to saving homeless Chows in N

orth and West Texas. In her memory, Houston Chow Chow Connection continues her passion of uniting Chow Chows with perfect forever families. HCCC began rescuing in 2013 and re-homed almost 1300 dogs since inception. Our dogs found homes on the East and West coasts of the U.S. and have traveled north and south even into Canada! As we continue to rescue and re-home more and more Chows, our costs grow. As you may know, rescuing animals takes money. Not only is there the typical care and upkeep (including food and general veterinary care), some of our rescues need specialized treatments. At HCCC we don’t pick and choose the dogs we rescue – they pick us. While the majority of our rescues are healthy, we never turn our backs on the homeless, Chows with physical issues, or disabilities. Some of our incoming babies have suffered long-term and extensive neglect. New HCCC dogs may require spay/neuter, shaving due to extensive matting, entropion and/or hip replacement surgeries, treatment of skin problems and a variety of other issues. We acquire much of our financing through donations and fund-raisers. Please help us provide our Chow babies with the quality of life they so richly deserve.

Two dogs are waiting in boarding, and three more need temporary placement while their foster families travel this summer.

Houston Chow Chow Connection provides support, guidance, and supplies while you provide a safe place for a dog to land.

Even if you've never fostered before, we'd love to talk with you.

📩 Send us a message to learn more about fostering.

Now this is the face of a dog that knows he will never be stranded in the streets or shelter again!

He is safe, thank you to a Foster that claimed him within 24 hours of euthanasia!

With this Foster’s huge heart, she provided this sweet boy loving space and is fostering him with plans to adopt.

She took him to the vet right away- quickly receiving care for his upper respiratory infection, ear infection, as well as itchy, skin, and paws. Also underweight.

We are so excited for him to meet the rest of his foster family animals once he is healed!

From his foster: “Little Mochi is just the best little guy. As it turns out he is also a tennis ball dog, so there may not be that much chow in there. 😄 He is still fighting off his URI, but his ears and itching are better. Three meals a day aren't hurting either!”🥹

This is how it’s done folks! Working together to save lives! 🐶❤️‍🩹

🖤 Black Chow Appreciation Post 🖤
There's just something special about a black Chow.

Maybe it's the way their coats shine in the sunlight. Maybe it's their lion-like silhouettes. Maybe it's the way their expressions somehow manage to look both wise and completely unimpressed at the same time.

Unfortunately, black-coated dogs are often overlooked in shelters and rescue simply because they can be harder to photograph and don't always stand out in online listings.
We think that's a shame.

Today we're celebrating the beauty, personality, and charm of black Chows everywhere. Here is a compilation of our CURRENTLY ADOPTABLE chows!😎😍❤️

☀️💛 Sunshine Boy Buddi Is Still Waiting 💛☀️

Some dogs bring energy.
Some dogs bring excitement.
Buddi brings peace. 🌼

At 8 years old and 69 pounds, Buddi is the kind of companion who makes a house feel like home. This handsome Chow Chow has a calm, steady presence — the quiet comfort of sunshine warming your day without asking for anything in return. ☀️💛

Buddi and his best friend Mitzi were once left behind with nothing but each other until rescue stepped in. Mitzi has found her forever family… and Buddi is still patiently waiting for someone to see just how special he is.

He’s a low-key king who enjoys the simple things:
🌻 Short walks in the fresh air
🐿️ Watching squirrels like a dedicated neighborhood supervisor
💛 Relaxing near his person, happy just to be together

Buddi doesn’t want a busy or chaotic life. He wants connection, consistency, and someone nearby who understands that loyalty takes time — but is worth everything. Like many Chows, he may start off reserved, but once you earn his trust, you gain a deeply devoted best friend. ✨

🏡 Buddi’s perfect home:
✔️ Calm environment with a Chow-savvy adopter ☀️
✔️ Prefers to be the only dog (may consider a calm female dog) 🌼
✔️ Someone who appreciates a loyal shadow and gentle companion 💛

Buddi has been waiting for his sunshine moment — the day someone chooses him. Could this be the spring his forever finally begins? 🌻☀️

❤️ IT IS WITH HEARTFELT JOY THAT WE ANNOUNCE EVANGELINE IS FINALLY READY FOR ADOPTION. ❤️

Before we tell her story, we want to pause and recognize the incredible people who made this moment possible.

To Harrison and Carol, who opened their home and hearts to Evangeline for months this spring and summer—thank you. You patiently worked through her fear, her medical needs, her uncertainty, and her distrust of the world. You taught her about comfort, routine, socialization, and human kindness. You celebrated the smallest victories and never gave up on her when progress came slowly.

The dog you see today exists because of the countless hours, patience, and love you poured into her.

And to our nationwide village of supporters—thank you. Every donation, every share, every encouraging comment, every prayer, every message asking for updates, and every ounce of love sent from across the country helped carry Evangeline to this day. The medical care, medications, diagnostics, boarding, and specialized treatment she received were only possible because so many people believed she was worth saving.

This happy ending belongs to all of you.

🐾🐾 EVANGELINE'S SECOND CHANCE 🐾🐾

Back in January, two frightened dogs arrived in our care.

Their names were Theodore and Evangeline.

They came to us carrying the weight of years of neglect. Their collars were embedded beneath heavily matted fur and had to be cut away piece by piece. Both suffered from severe skin disease, painful ear infections, extensive hair loss, heartworm disease, and eyes that had gone untreated for far too long.
Veterinary records described Evangeline as extremely fearful. She didn't know that people could be kind. She didn't know what safety felt like.

We promised both dogs that their story wasn't over.

Sadly, Theodore's body was simply too tired to continue the fight. Despite every effort, we lost him just weeks after intake.

Evangeline stayed.
And little by little, she began to heal.
Not just her skin.
Not just her eyes.
Her heart.

Today, six months later, the frightened little dog who once wanted nothing to do with people has blossomed into one of the easiest companions we've ever fostered.

At approximately 7 years old and just 40 pounds, Evangeline is quiet, gentle, and wonderfully low maintenance. She is fully house trained, crate trained, and respectful in the home. She doesn't need long walks, constant entertainment, or a busy lifestyle.
She simply wants to belong.

A porch to sit on.
A peaceful home.
A person to share life with.

Evangeline enjoys the company of other dogs and is happy to peacefully coexist with dogs of any size or gender. She loves being part of the group, quietly observing the action and joining in when she chooses.

And when she loves you, she loves deeply.

She still appreciates a calm environment and patient people. Sudden movements, loud chaos, and busy households can make her uneasy, so she would do best in an adult home or one with older, respectful teenagers.

The beautiful thing about Evangeline is that we've watched her learn to trust again. Over the past six months she has bonded with multiple caregivers, proving that beneath her cautious Chow exterior is an incredibly sweet soul who wants connection just as much as any other dog.

Her autoimmune eye condition has improved tremendously during her time in rescue. She will continue to need prescription eye ointment every few days to keep her comfortable—a small commitment for a dog who asks for so very little in return.

Today her coat is thick and soft. Her eyes are brighter. Her tail wags more often.

She looks like a little bear.

But what we see is a survivor.
A dog who endured more than she ever should have.
A dog who never stopped trying.
A dog who is finally ready to be somebody's beloved companion.
Theodore never got the chance to find his happy ending.

We would love nothing more than for Evangeline to find hers.

🐾 An Unexpected Emergency for Pickles

Just two months ago, Pickles joined our rescue and settled into her foster home in Tomball, Texas. Since then, she's been busy being exactly what a puppy should be—happy, playful, and loved.

This week, everything changed in an instant.
One morning, Pickles' foster mom let her outside for her normal potty break. When she went to let her back inside a short time later, she found Pickles lying by the back door unresponsive and collapsed.

Pickles was rushed to the emergency veterinarian, where doctors discovered she was in anaphylactic shock, a severe whole-body allergic reaction that caused her blood pressure to plummet and her body to go into crisis. She required immediate emergency treatment, including IV fluids, epinephrine, antihistamines, advanced diagnostics, hospitalization, and continuous monitoring to save her life.

Thankfully, Pickles responded to treatment and was stable enough to return home later that day. ❤️

While we are incredibly grateful she pulled through, her recovery is still ongoing.

Bloodwork showed elevated liver values likely related to the shock event, and she has been sent home with medications, started on a special diet, and is scheduled for follow-up bloodwork this Friday to monitor her liver function and ensure she continues healing.

💚 Pickles' care has included:
🐾 Emergency hospitalization
🐾 Ultrasound and diagnostic testing
🐾 IV fluids and lifesaving medications
🐾 Ongoing medications at home
🐾 Prescription diet support
🐾 Follow-up bloodwork and liver monitoring

The exact trigger for her reaction may never be known. It could have been an insect sting, something in the environment, or another allergen entirely. What we do know is that without immediate veterinary intervention, the outcome could have been very different.

If you'd like to help offset the cost of Pickles' emergency care and continued treatment, any donation—big or small—makes a difference.

If you can’t, please like, comment, or share — it truly helps this reach more people.

Most importantly, please keep Pickles in your thoughts as she continues her recovery.
