This is a pattern game. There are no cues. Eye contact earns reinforcement. The Up & Down game (thanks Leslie McDevitt) that builds focus and attention around distractions. Watch this session. Notice how one dog gets more excited as the game goes on and the other offers behaviors. 🐾🐾

My client's goal, what training they and their dog have undertaken, what they enjoy doing, and health and safety are taken into account. There are no quick, guaranteed fixes. If someone is telling you they guarantee a solution - walk away. If they guarantee a tool or 'technique' will fix the problem run. It seldom does.

I continue to learn so that I can offer solutions. Training takes time, commitment and understanding. We need to understand the why's and how's to make a difference.
When you hire a trainer/coach, consider their education and if they participate in continuing education. Is it science based? Is it compassionate to both dog and handler? Does the trainer/coach approach every situation using the same tools and techniques?

Our journey begins with a phone conversation. Many trainers will not talk with you or insist on training remotely. Remote sessions have their place in behavior modification. Talking before training or a coaching session helps ensure we have a common objective. It's seldom a speedy process. My goal is to be as supportive as possible for both ends of the leash.

Practicing when you don't need the skill helps you and the dog learn the skill. Doing anything when nervous or excited reduces our ability to perform tasks. Our responses often slow down. It's the same with our dogs. Practice in the house, in the yard, and then on an easy walk through a quiet area.

If using positive reinforcement works this well during a pedicure for a giraffe, imagine how it can change your relationship with your dog!ā¤ļøšŸ’•ā¤ļø

I have two senior dogs. Gus is 11 and Jessie 9. I'm pretty impressed with these two. We keep them moving, running and jumping. They track trails on the property, lounge in the sun and hopefully are having a good time. I think we are too. I hope you find some moments to enjoy your dog(s) and realize these are the best momentsā£

Communication for the win! If your service agreement includes support via text or email, take your trainer up on that support. Many don't offer help without charging additional fees. It can make a difference when you receive the needed support.

I made this post a week ago. My session yesterday in a park with a dog who is aware of everything reminded to post this. Support your dog. Take training and rebuilding connection a step at a time. Look for victories. They are always presentā£

Environmental cues‼
See the grey mat the red arrow is pointing to. I have used this mat for years as a place where the dogs relax to be brushed, have their ears cleaned, take turns for training, etc. You won't hear me ask Gus to down on the mat. He knows. You can create cues with the environment. Use them. It makes it easier for the dog and for you.

Take a mat. Teach a down. Offer cookies, toys, meals, and attention on the mat. Take that same mat to a new location and repeat. I bet you will see your dog begin to relax on the mat without being asked.

Jessie came to us through a local rescue. She was a munchkin. Cute, quiet, scared, and frequently seeking assurance. She followed her canine brother's every step even over the fence at 11pm one night chasing the forbidden at only a few months of age. Black dogs at night in the country are a frightening combo. She is an amazing tracker. She loves doing just about anything. She loves stealing my pillow at 5amā£ļøAnd after having her do it for 9 years I can't image her not being there when I wake up. Happy Day After Gotcha DayšŸ’•

Both dogs love the jello toss! It's great exercise and very low in calories. The bounce is the bomb. Gus is getting pretty good at catching them mid-run in the air. I'm not good at catching him in the act with a camera🤣

It really is about both ends of the leash.

My goal is to help you build and maintain a quality relationship with your dog. Our dogs are our companions for life. We want to enjoy them and often include them in as many aspects of our lives as possible. Why not enjoy a well trained companion who is confident and comfortable whether it’s in your home or on one of your adventures.
