In April I announced that I would be having my quarterly operating funds campaign. I had been lucky that in April I was able to go two quarters without asking.
Yes, though it may not seem that way...I have been able once again to go two quarters without asking. Combination of luck, one-off donations and some in-kind donations made it possible for me to go this far without my hat in hat. Now that I have paid my land note down to almost nothing, getting close to zero overhead. AC in the kennel still a killer in July and August...oh also June and September and some of October and May. No major (knock on wood) dog catastrophes, just a couple spays and neuters, annuals, preventative meds, etc. I was able to fidget with the dogs' chews and goodies so that my Costco runs weren't $500 every two weeks.
Those who know me know I hate asking. But I have to ask. My hat in my hand. (Which reminds me that it should be on my bald head in the Houston sun. )
Second part of the message is to reveal my plans for the next year:
Because adoptions are so slow and there are 17 dogs here, Jade's has in essence become a sanctuary. So if we are a sanctuary, might as well set up as a sanctuary. The land is worth quite a bit. I am testing the market to see what I would get. There are two possible outcomes.
If I get an offer I think is fair, I would be able to use the cash to buy much more land far away from dog dumping central. No neighbors.
If no offer comes in within the next six months I will just convert this place. First by privacy fence all around it. Cameras. The back of the property will have additional play areas built. This way all dogs will have access to nature all day.
Once the conversion is done I will only be taking seniors and hospice dogs. They will spend their golden years here. I will build a house and take my lumps being stuck here.
Sadly, the time I have spent on loading the trailer and taking dogs to adoption events, posting the dogs everywhere, making fun videos, etc. has been wasted time. Every shelter here is full and I am in essence competing with massive shelters like Montgomery County and Harris County. They routinely have 'clear the shelter' days and basically give the dogs away. I cannot do that. I need to check the adopters.
So that is the state of the rescue. Change is coming. Operating finds needed.
