Shipped eggs can be such a gamble 🥚

This hatch has definitely been a learning experience. Out of 23 shipped eggs, all but 2 developed, which honestly gave me a lot of hope. But by lockdown I was down to 12… and only 2 babies made it out.

The rest were fully formed but didn’t make it, which points to drowning during hatch — something that can happen when humidity is too high, especially with shipped eggs.

For comparison, I run my own eggs at 50% humidity and had a 93% hatch rate on my Black Copper Marans so I know that setting works great under the right conditions. Just not for this batch.

I had my incubator set at 50% humidity for these shipped eggs, which works for some, but clearly wasn’t the right fit here. Next round, I’ll be lowering my humidity and reassessing from there.

Hatching, even for seasoned hatchers, is always a learning process. What works perfectly for one person (or even one batch) might not work for another. Adjust, learn, and try again🤍

Here’s to hoping the next hatch goes a little smoother.

Fellow breeders please stop sending eggs like this. This is definitely a “pullet” first time layer egg whatever you want to call it. It’s unacceptable. If it’s falling out of the foam shipper and has room to move around DONT send it. Shipping is already a gamble why add to it😖
