🐈‍⬛ FERAL FRIDAY 🐈‍⬛

It’s kitten season, and we’re tracking kittens all across the Twin Cities! Right now, we’re working with a homeowner who’s been caring for a very smart female cat living in the woods behind her property. We’ve rescued kittens from this location before, but we’ve never been able to catch this elusive mama.

This spring, she was spotted back in the area with four kittens in tow. Unfortunately, while attempting to trap the family, the homeowner only caught one kitten.

When trapping a mother cat with kittens, our goal is always to:
• Trap all of the kittens first
• Trap the mother if the kittens are located and can be quickly rescued
• Or trap the mother with some kittens if the remaining kittens can be easily recovered

What we never want to do is trap only SOME of the kittens and leave the others behind. As tempting as it can be to grab the easy-to-catch kittens, the reality is that the mother will often move the remaining kittens immediately and they may never be seen again.

Sadly, that’s exactly what happened here.

But we finally got a lucky break: we trapped mom! We were able to get her spayed the very next day and fitted her with a tracking collar while she was under anesthesia.

The challenge now is that she travels constantly and rarely stays in one spot for long, making it difficult to locate the kittens. We do know she regularly eats and visits a certain area, so we set up a drop trap with a remote-controlled door. Inside, we placed lots of food and even a few toys to keep curious kittens occupied if they wander in.

Keep your fingers crossed that mama brings her babies by for a meal so we can finally get them to safety!

In the meantime, here’s a video of a raccoon visitor who decided the toys were pretty entertaining too. At least we know that part is working.

🐈 FERAL FRIDAY 🐈

The “vacuum effect” is something we see all the time. When cats are removed from an area, others move in to take advantage of the space and resources.

That’s exactly what happened in a southwest suburb where we had trapped all but one cat and were holding them for surgery. A new male showed up.

We were able to trap him and bring him in for TNR, but once he was under anesthesia, it was clear he was in rough shape. He had wounds, infected teeth, and needed significant dental care. We ran a blood test, and the results weren’t good. He tested positive for both FIV and FeLV.

Our policy is to give cats a chance to live, even with FIV or FeLV. FIV is typically spread through deep bite wounds, and FeLV through prolonged close contact. Neutering reduces the behaviors that lead to transmission. We also know that tests aren’t always definitive. False positives can happen, and some cats with regressive FeLV may later test negative.

But life outdoors already comes with a lot of risk. Predators, traffic, illness. We only test in cases where advanced medical care is needed, and then we make the most humane decision we can with the information we have.

In this case, because of the severity of his injuries, infections, and dual diagnosis, we chose to let him go peacefully while still under anesthesia.

If he had been otherwise healthy, he would have been neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and returned to his outdoor home. That’s always the goal.

Every decision we make comes back to the same principle: giving each cat the best life possible, with the least suffering.

🐈 FERAL FRIDAY 🐈

When we’re out in the field doing TNR (trap-neuter-return), every cat needs a name so we can keep track of who’s who. We usually go with something descriptive, like “One Dot,” a white cat with a single black spot near his rear. Not to be confused with “Two Dot,” who had two. We’ve also had “Phantom,” named for her half-black, half-white face that looked just like a mask.

But when we named this cat “Charlie Chaplin,” there was no question which one we meant. Charlie was the final cat at a small colony west of the Cities.

Today, Charlie is at the clinic for surgery. Plot twist, Charlie is actually a she. Even more importantly, she was diagnosed with pyometra (an infection of the uterus), so we’re very glad she’s getting the treatment she needs along with her spay.

Do you name the colony cats you work with? We’d love to hear your favorites.
