🔥☀️ 106° ‘FEELS LIKE’ TEMPERATURE?! That’s a HARD NO for our furry friends! ☀️🔥
Today’s extreme temps and humidity are dangerous—especially for our four-legged friends. Keep them safe by making sure they have plenty of cool, clean water at all times. 💧 It's a simple step that can prevent heatstroke and save lives.
🚫 No hot pavement.
🚫 No long walks.
🚫 No leaving pets in cars - not even for a minute!

Ginger was diagnosed with glaucoma, where the pressure in her eyes became elevated leading her to not only have some pain in her eyes, but took her sight due to pressure and cataracts, and now ultimately has lead us to the decision for the heartbreaking surgical removal of her eyes.

Ginger is an Aussie/Chow mix, approximately eight years old. Chows are a bit of a spicy breed and can be particular about their people. She is absolutely adorable and very sweet once she is comfortable. She really needs a home that will be patient and understanding of her situation. The family must understand her breed history and be willing to read her body language although she has softened up with age.

Ginger must have a child and pet free home-teenagers would likely be okay. She was adopted once and returned because of her spicy attitude, this was before she went blind. She is house and crate trained and has gone 16 hours in her kennel with no accidents prior to losing her eyes but she is slowly adjusting. She will need to be groomed but by a private groomer dedicated to getting to know her—peachy paws has volunteered to be that groomer!!
She is otherwise friendly, playful and can become a very loyal companion and has come to really love the staff.

Ginger walks well on a leash but you have to be extra careful right now because she does still walk into things. She has adjusted relatively well so far to the change in her life. Her favorite thing to do is walk the perimeter of the fence and make sure no land goes un-sniffed. She is still playful and loves attention. Come say hello to this pretty girlie.

Temps are rising and we’ve got a hot tip: heatstroke is no joke! 🥵

Frenchies and other flat-faced breeds can overheat fast, so when in doubt, keep them inside during the hottest parts of the day.

Stay cool out there, friends! ☀️💦

Heads up, pet parents! With the warmer weather, snakes are more active, especially in tall grass, trails, and around water. Last week, a pet parent said a large cooperhead was spotted in a neighborhood near the clinic. (see picture below)

Keep a close eye on your pets when you're outside, and try to stick to clear paths. Always check your yard before letting them roam. A curious nose and a hidden snake can be a dangerous mix!

If your pet is bitten by a snake...
Stay calm and keep your pet as still and quiet as possible.
Get to AVAC immediately — time is critical.
If possible, call ahead so we’re ready when you arrive. (205) 967-7383

If your pet is bitten after hours, take them to one of the after-hours clinics listed on our page.

We want you and your pet to stay safe this summer.
