Are you and your dog enjoying these final bits of dry weather before we get some rain?

Be like Paul (pictured here with his pack) when out and about.

-> Keep your dog on a leash unless they are in a designated off leash area.

-> Clean up after your pet and dispose of the waste properly.

-> Make sure your pup is wearing identification – including a current dog license.

We are thankful for the many considerate and kind pet owners in our community who help make our parks and other public spaces pleasant places for all.

Ten dogs and one cat were reunited with their families last week at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter! We also transferred four dogs and three cats to partner organizations for eventual adoption, as well as directly adopted one dog to its new family after no owner came forward. Thank you for your continued support!

Celebrating Thanksgiving with a dog or cat in your household can be both fun and a little stressful.

Sometimes our pets have a way of getting into things they shouldn’t – especially with the tempting smells of holiday cooking!

Stay safe this holiday:

➡️ Watch out for food items that get dropped on the ground or are otherwise accessible to your pet. Not only are some human foods dangerous to animals, but dog fights can break out over food. Some dogs may also try to bite when food or wrappers are taken away from them.

➡️ When cooking, safely dispose of trash that may still have the smell of food on it. Items like plastic bags, foil and strings can cause choking, intestinal blockages or other serious issues.

➡️ Take steps to keep pets out of trash and compost bins that may contain foods that are dangerous to them, such as onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, raw dough and bones.

➡️ Create a safe space away from the action for your pet. A comfy room behind a closed door means you won’t have to worry about your pet getting into things they shouldn’t while you’re occupied with holiday activities.

Contact your veterinarian or your closest emergency veterinary clinic if you think your pet has eaten something that may be dangerous to them. If you are not able to reach a local veterinarian, you can also try the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at 888-426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661.

If you stop by our shelter between now and January 15, you'll notice a big blue bin as you enter the building. That's because we are a drop off location for the Portland Veterinary Medical Association's Winter Pet Food and Supplies Drive!

We welcome you to stop by with your donations during our walk-in hours, which are Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note we will be closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

These donations will go to:
- Portland Animal Welfare Team - PAW Team
- Coffee Creek Puppy Program (which raises puppies for Canine Companions)

Find a list of most needed items and learn more about the beneficiaries at https://www.portlandvma.org/2025-pvma-winter-pet-food-and-supplies-drive.

Do we get the cutest visitors or what?! Luna stopped by the shelter this morning with her human to pick up her very first Washington County dog license. We think a license tag is going to be the PERFECT accessory to that hair!

Whether you’re taking your pet on the road with you this Thanksgiving, leaving them in the care of a pet sitter, or welcoming guests into your home who may accidently leave a gate and door open… Now is the time to make sure your furry friend is wearing identification!

Still need an ID tag? Many pet supply stores have machines onsite that can create a new tag in minutes! Consider including more than one phone number on the ID tag. Do you have a roommate, friend or family member who can be your back-up if you can’t be reached?

You can also have your phone number embroidered onto your pet’s collar, which will provide a way to contact you if a tag falls off. Using a Sharpie to write your number on your pet’s collar will also work in a pinch!

If the sound of jingling tags bothers you, there are “silencers” and tag covers you can purchase to keep the noise to a minimum.

We sell replacement Washington County dog license tags for $5 if your licensed pup has lost that tag. If your dog is not yet licensed, visit www.washingtoncountydoglicense.com for more information on doing that online, in person, over the phone or by mail.
