Five Interesting Facts About Rabies
Transmission: Rabies is a viral disease transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, typically through bites or scratches.
Incubation Period: The incubation period, the time between exposure and the onset of symptoms, can range from a few days to several months.
Animal Reservoirs: Bats, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and dogs are common reservoirs of rabies in the United States.
Symptoms: Early symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches, and anxiety. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience hydrophobia (fear of water), paralysis, and confusion.
Prevention: Rabies is preventable through vaccination. Pets and livestock should be regularly vaccinated, and individuals who are bitten or scratched by animals should seek immediate medical attention for post-exposure treatment.
