This adult female box turtle was struck by a vehicle in Winchester, VA causing facial fractures and severe trauma to her left eye.

Surgery was performed to completely enucleate the left eye and place a feeding tube so that this patient can be tube fed as the beak fractures heal.

We have released over a dozen of our overwintering turtles in the past week, but our reptile rooms are filling up quickly! Please remember that turtles are out crossing roads this time of year. Drive with caution and avoid “rocks” in the road!

If an uninjured turtle is found in the road, please help it across in the direction it was travelling and never relocate. If a turtle in the road is injured, please call the Center for advice!

Behavior Vets

Behavior modification is a two-prong approach: training/modifying behavior and management.

An effective behavior modification program includes good management. This involves controlling your environment as much as possible to prevent your dog from going over threshold and reacting. The goal is to create an environment in which your dog has little or no opportunity to practice the behaviors you are seeking to change.
If you don’t manage your dog and you allow him to continue practicing the undesired behaviors, progress is unlikely; you might as well be spinning your wheels in the mud.

Thank you 4 Paws University for this great illustration on management!

For this Easter season consider paper Easter grass..

PLEASE REMEMBER:
Plastic Easter grass (left) lasts forever in the environment and tiny, lost pieces find their way into bird nests where they can entangle and maim or kill the babies... even sometimes the adults. Please opt for the crinkled paper version (right). It eventually biodegrades and is much safer.
