Science.
“E-collar training did not result in a substantially superior response to training in comparison to similarly experienced trainers who do not use e-collars to improve recall and control chasing behaviour. Accordingly, it seems that the routine use of e-collars even in accordance with best practice (as suggested by collar manufacturers) presents a risk to the well-being of pet dogs. The scale of this risk would be expected to be increased when practice falls outside of this ideal.”
Electronic Training Collars in Comparison to Reward Based Training - PMC

This study investigated the welfare consequences of training dogs in the field with manually operated electronic devices (e-collars). Following a preliminary study on 9 dogs, 63 pet dogs referred for recall related problems were assigned to one of ...

Personal Training Tails:
Some of you have met or heard me talk about resident dog, Holly. She’s a 3 year old sled dog, with a high prey drive, and a big personality. Impulse control practice has been a constant through-line of our training together since I brought her home at 8 weeks of age and we’ve had our ups and downs in this area. So I have to express how proud I am of my girl after our recent trail walk.

We encountered multiple deer, including several runners as well as a mom and baby laying under a tree, and Holly was able to gather all her self-control and recall all the hours of training we’ve done together over the last few years. She checked in with me, remained at my side, and moved along the trail quietly - no lunging, chasing, barking, or whining - and I beamed with pride!

I also reminded myself that just because she was able to do this today, doesn’t mean she’ll be successful at it tomorrow. But it does mean we are continuing to move forward.

Training takes time. It’s not linear. And sometimes it can feel like you’re banging your head against a brick wall. But then there are the moments when you breakthrough and see the light.

Keep-up the hard work and keep finding ways to have fun with your dog through the frustration. It’s worth it!

Why is Smokey looking so pleased with himself? Because this guy, along with his handler, just rocked his private training consult!
We met at a local park to help prep for his upcoming NW2 trial with the National Association of Canine Scent Work, and while we were there we not only worked on nose work skills, but Smokey also got to practice working through his on-leash reactivity with other dogs with wonderful results.
Team Smokey was successful on all fronts making Smokey, his human, and his trainer all very happy!
Smokey and his human have come so far together and I’m incredibly proud to be part of their journey!
