We have some exciting news to share!

Introducing our newest doctor, Dr. Erin Persons! 🥳

Originally from the Albany, New York area, Dr. Persons earned her undergraduate degree from Wells College in the Finger Lakes region. After spending several years working on a Morgan horse farm, she pursued her veterinary education at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine in Glendale, Arizona, graduating in May 2026. 👩🏻‍⚕️

Dr. Persons is excited to return to the Northeast, where she looks forward to enjoying the beautiful fall foliage and cooler temperatures. Outside of the clinic, she enjoys reading, camping, and spending time at home with her dog, Daisy, and her two cats.

Dr. Persons has an interest in small ruminant medicine but loves treating all sorts of patients. She is excited to join the Henniker team and looks forward to getting to know all of our wonderful patients and their families!

Her first day at Henniker Vet will be Monday 8/17. She will be shadowing a doctor in office and on the road while she gets used to the hospital flow.

Earlier this week, Dr. Jen Scanlon wasn't feeling like herself. What started as abdominal pain quickly turned into an unexpected trip to the ER.

Dr. Jen was diagnosed with appendicitis and underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday. We're happy to share that her surgery went well, and she is now home focusing on rest and recovery.

She will be out of the office for the next two weeks and will return on light duty as she eases back into work.

We ask for your patience, flexibility, and understanding as our team works together to care for our patients during these next few weeks.

🚨 Rabies Alert: Please Make Sure Your Pets Are Protected 🚨

Over the past several weeks, we have received multiple calls regarding pets that have had interactions with bats, including several incidents in the Henniker area.

This past week, one of our patients came into contact with a bat. The owner did the right thing by avoiding direct contact with the bat and immediately contacting our office and New Hampshire Fish and Game. The bat was submitted for testing and unfortunately tested positive for rabies.

This serves as an important reminder to ensure your pets are current on their rabies vaccinations. Rabies vaccination is recommended for dogs, cats, horses, sheep, and goats.

🐱 Even indoor cats should stay up to date on their rabies vaccine!! While they may never go outside, bats and other wildlife can occasionally find their way into homes, putting indoor pets at risk.

If your pet has any contact with a bat or other wild animal:
• Do not handle the wild animal if possible.
• Contact our office right away for guidance.
• If it is safe to do so, contact New Hampshire Fish and Game for assistance with the animal.

Rabies is a serious disease, but it is preventable through vaccination. Keeping your pets up to date is the best way to protect them and your family.

☀️ Summer Pet Safety Reminder 🐾

As temperatures rise, it's important to help keep your pets safe and comfortable during the summer months.

🐕 Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day. Schedule walks, hikes, and playtime for the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Always bring plenty of fresh water and watch for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or lethargy.

🚗 Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise to dangerous levels within minutes, putting pets at risk for heatstroke and other life-threatening emergencies.

🌡️ If you suspect your pet may be overheating, move them to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

🎆 Next week is July 4th and fireworks season is here – Time to plan ahead for anxious pets 🐾

While fireworks can be fun for people, they can be frightening and stressful for many pets. Loud noises, bright flashes, and unexpected sounds can trigger anxiety, panic, and even attempts to escape.

If your pet has a history of fear or anxiety during fireworks, now is the time to prepare. Prescription anti-anxiety medications and sedatives can help many pets stay calmer and more comfortable during celebrations—but these medications should be discussed and prescribed BEFORE the fireworks begin.

Some tips to help your pet:
🐾 Create a safe, quiet space indoors.
🐾 Close windows and curtains to reduce noise and flashes.
🐾 Play calming music or white noise.
🐾 Ensure collars and ID tags are up to date in case a frightened pet escapes.
🐾 Talk to us about medication options if your pet struggles with fireworks anxiety.

Farewell, Dr. Kira Doherty! ❤️🐾

Last week we said goodbye to Dr. Kira Doherty as she leaves Henniker Veterinary Hospital and begins an exciting new chapter back home in Massachusetts, where she'll be closer to her family.

Dr. Kira has been a valued member of our team, providing compassionate care to countless pets and building meaningful relationships with their families. Her dedication, kindness, and expertise have made a lasting impact on our hospital and community.

While we are saddened to see her go, we are grateful for the time we shared and are excited for all that lies ahead for her. She will be greatly missed by our staff, patients, and clients alike.
