Happy Wet Friday from Clear Creek Grange. We got our fertilizer down just in time for the two inches of rain we got today to activate it! Perfect timing. Did you know that watermelons (despite their names) don’t need a lot of rain once they get established? In fact, too much rain late in their development dilutes the sugar and can even cause them to burst open in the field! Enjoy this mild weather because hot watermelon eating weather will be here soon enough, and we hope you will turn to us first for all your watermelon and cantaloupe needs!

The rows are marked, the fertilizer is buried and now we are just waiting on the seed. If you are looking for a Texas company that supplies quality seed then Willhite is a great choice. It’s time to get your seeds in the ground! We are already enjoying fresh asparagus and the onions are coming along nicely.

A week ago this field was covered with melting snow. Today it’s being prepared for watermelons and cantaloupes. Time to order the seed!

Beignet made his debut with his mother Nola at Clear Creek Grange on the coldest night on the farm in over 30 years. He is doing great and already running and jumping. It’s never too early to start planning our summer crops! We are doubling the size of our watermelon patch and increasing the amount of cantaloupes we are planting. What vegetables or fruits are you looking forward to harvesting this summer? What is your speciality that you grow yourself?

Things we have learned about pumpkins to be better prepared next year. As plants they are very tender and can’t stand Texas summer heat. They need watering nearly everyday. The vines go on and on and on. It appears as though they may need to be rotated on their vines periodically so that they don’t develop a flat or discolored side. We are much better at growing watermelons and cantaloupe!

Sis the Bulldog says go get your pumpkins from Gurrola’s Produce in Hempstead, Texas or DiIorio Farms. Our pumpkin patch got murdered by two longhorns and the hot August sun, so we are depending on our local farmers’ markets for our pumpkins this year.
