A very common question I get from owners when a dog is here for Board & Train: “well what happens when…”

Nothing. Nothing happens when… because I don’t set the dog up to fail like that.

I train and prepare a dog. Baby steps. LEASH ON. We trainers, we use a leash a lot, and for a very long time, for a reason.

A leash is a communication tool, not simply a restraint tool.

I am not going to see what your dog does without a leash until they know what to do WITH a leash.

I am not going to see what your dog does when someone knocks until I see that they know how to act when someone doesn’t and just walks in.

I am not going to see your dog’s reaction to situation B, until I know they can respond appropriately to situation A.

When trainers do things in small steps and with leashes on, it’s because we are TEACHING. We aren’t running around, throwing dogs into situations that could be scary or stressful, hoping for the best and crossing our fingers which are subsequently sitting on an ecollar button.

How would you feel if you went to school, were told to do a geometry problem when all you know is basic math, then socked in the face when you get it wrong?

The LEASH is the ultimate teaching tool. It’s how we teach the geometry to the student who only knows basic math. It’s how we communicate.

If your dog can’t do it ON a leash, your dog can’t do it OFF a leash.

Put the leash on the dog.

Here’s a little informational visual regarding a few common tools! 😉

The prong collar is actually one of the safest collars in the world due to the fact that the tips of the prongs that are touching the dogs neck, actually only apply about 25-30% pressure to the dogs neck where as your basic flat collar is 100% pressure all the way around the dogs neck!

The Hermsprenger Prongs that I use and supply in my programs also have a base plate that helps protect the esophagus and the prongs go in opposite directions so that the pressure is evenly distributed and the dog responds much better 100% of the time as opposed to the “cheap” off brand prongs you can purchase at petco, pet smart, Walmart and a few other places that don’t have the base plate for protection and show all prongs going in one direction which essentially just twists the dogs neck and doesn’t actually correct any kind of pulling. ESPECIALLY when not fitted properly. The proper way to place the prong on your dog is directly below the jawline, snug enough so that it doesn’t drop to the shoulders or throat, with the base plate on that esophagus! The diameter of those “cheaper” prongs is also always significantly bigger than necessary to realllyyy help deter you from a very incredible tool! I have found that the 2.25mm works for most dogs! ☺️

As a balanced trainer, I use whatever tools work for the dog in front of me! I’m not against any tools, but I do want the SAFEST tools possible that WORK and have done extensive research to be able to provide that knowledge of those tools as well as the progression they can show in your dogs behavior too!

Happy Tool Tuesday! 🐾
