The I want to thank the wonderful folks at FARMore WA sweat equity for coming out yesterday to help with shoot positioning. It was soooo nice talking to someone other than myself out in the vineyard!!! If you’re a farm you really should check them out. They off several programs to help small farms in the area.

2026 Pinot Report - getting close to flowering!!! Lots of thinning yet to do. Spraying OMRI certified sulfur and boron today. Our site is fairly dry with morning wind and a huge diurnal temperature delta between night and day. Here in our banana belt rain shadow micro climate, we typically only spray three to four times a season which is crazy for Western Washington!

We’ve been farming notill regeneratively since 2018 and since then we’ve seen a remarkable increase in soil health. We switched to this type of farming after watching a talk by the grapevine font of knowledge/oracle Dr. Markus Keller with Washington State University. Now I’m not classically trained in any of this, but I do believe in science ( ) and Dr. Keller made it easy to understand the relationship between soil biology and grapevine health, so much so that it was a no brainer to switch from conventional agriculture to notill regenerative farming.

Owning a vineyard in western Washington means you need to cover the vine rows with nets our you’ll loose most or all of your grape clusters. My son Ethan walked the vineyard to collect these bags of nets and nicely stack them in the upper storage area of the winery. Each bag covers three rows and range in 50ft to 450ft in length. Now if I can just remember which one goes on which rows in August.

Work continues … in our notill regenerative vineyard. Watching the ground cover starting to generate carbohydrates for their own cell division and also for the biology living in the soil. The carbohydrates that the ground cover creates from their leaves and transfers down to their roots and then to the bacteria and fungi in the soil is how carbon (carbohydrates) are sequestered from the air (ground cover leaf photosynthesis) into the earth.
