If you need an emergent place for a stray, we can make space in our home. Just call us at 443-889-4158 asap. Please shelter any kitty or dog you come across outside ahead of this storm. They won’t live through it. If you have a spare bedroom, bathroom, office, or basement, you’ve got space, and you’ll save a life.

A major winter storm is on the way, and it's going to be brutal — we're talking over 10 inches of snow, ice, and temperatures that dip below zero. If you have pets who usually stay outside, now is the time to bring them in. That sweet stray you see around your neighborhood, or those kittens without a home — they don’t stand a chance in this weather. Even dogs that are used to living outdoors are at serious risk. Make a plan now.

If you can, make a safe spot for them inside your house. Your bedroom, a bathroom, even an old dog crate will do. If you don’t have supplies, post on Facebook or ask your neighbors — someone might have a crate or pet supplies you can use. Anything is better than leaving these animals outside to face the storm.

For feral cats or animals you can’t handle, don’t use blankets or towels outside — they’ll just freeze and make things worse. Instead, fill a plastic tote or sheltered spot with straw, which stays dry and warm even in the cold. That simple step could mean the difference between life and death.

Please do what you can this weekend.
One small temporary act can save a life.

Mochi Update:
Tonight was the only time in my life when I’ve sobbed from pure joy. The doctor was supposed to call me at 5pm. He didn’t. We got back there around 6:30. I’d been preparing myself all day for the fact that I would have to choose euthanasia for Mochi because I’d exhausted my finances. When I walked in, she wasn’t in the ICU oxygen crate. As I started to panic, they took me to Mochi, across the hospital in a regular cage, having just finished dinner and meds. If you could have seen her Wednesday and Thursday, you’d have thought it impossible. This was the best birthday gift I could ask for. As long as she is stable on room air, I can care for her myself around the clock. She’s on strict crate rest for five days and she has eight meds. We are dealing with pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension, a partially collapsed lung, and COPD. She may not fully recover, but she’s a fighter. Thank you all who helped us: Joan Burdette (Almost Home Dog Rescue), Amy Simon, Mat Pachate, Allyson Warner & Patrick Gearhart, & Janine Tipton.

🐶 🐶 🐶 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶 I’ll take down the Go Fund Me, as there are fees involved. Anyone wishing to donate to Mochi’s care can contact VEG Columbia directly at 410-690-4670 and ask to donate to Mochi Olson’s medical care. 100% goes to her care, no fees. Many thanks to Joan Burdette at Almost Home Dog Rescue, Amy Simon, & Pat Machate.
Below is the Go Fund Me post from yesterday and updates.

Help needed to save Mochi!
Our sweet rescue dog Mochi was hospitalized at VEG ER in Columbia last night. She is currently in ICU on 40% oxygen after suffering respiratory distress. They diagnosed her with pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension.
We took her to CVCA in December, suspecting a new cough could be a heart issue. They diagnosed her with Asthma, and with their recommendations and her primary care overseeing, we’ve been treating her for Asthma with two medications. We’ve learned i is likely that she does not have Asthma, but rather Bronchitis that wasn’t diagnosed and treated properly and so turned into pneumonia.
Mochi remains in the ER on oxygen because I cannot find a more cost effective primary care vet who can accommodate her needs. 9pm 1/15 is the 24 hour mark. She may need 36-48 hours hospitalized on oxygen. At the 48 hour mark, if she can’t breathe on room air, we will have to make hard decisions. Mochi is making improvements. so there is hope. Our obstacle is financing the ER bill, which currently exceeds $4000. Another 24 hours in hospital will nearly double that expense.
We fostered Mochi in September 2023 for Almost Home Dog Rescue. After two months, we were a foster fail and adopted her. Mochi is a senior Miniature Poodle who was rescued in Texas by a good Samaritan who witnessed her being thrown from a moving truck. She survived that. X-rays showed that she had a bb lodged in her chest from having been shot. She also underwent cancer surgery to remove a mammary tumor. She also has no teeth, and we don’t know why. She’s had a very hard life, but this doggo is a survivor.
I tried searching for a less expensive 24/7 primary care hospital that she might be transferred to, but no luck because of the oxygen requirement. I want to give her every chance to heal. The next 24 hours are critical. I myself have nearly died from pneumonia more than once. Today (1/15) is my 52nd birthday. I’ve nearly exhausted my finances, but I don’t have it in my heart to give up on her yet. I don’t ever ask for help unless it is truly needed. This bills for us are all at once now with Mochi’s illness and in December, Gomez was diagnosed with end stage heart failure and Ollie with Dementia.

Update: 12:13am 1/16
Mochi was more alert this evening. While we were there, she had IV Ondansetron, an oral, appetite stimulant, and a nebulizer treatment and I was able to hand feed her 1.5oz of food. She is still on 40% oxygen. They will try to wean her off the oxygen again around 4am. Past attempts have been unsuccessful. The ER bill thus far is $9156.55.

🎄Update: Thanks to Amy, Lauren, and Toni & Kelly for your donations. We’ve been invited to deliver gifts in person at the seniors’ holiday party, so we’ll be road tripping to Kentucky on 12/17! Pet sitter extraordinaire, Miss Pat, will be at my house caring for my fur babies and covering my pet sitting jobs.

Original post:
I “adopted” a senior a few years ago through the non-profit Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents. I send Miss Donna a care package on her birthday (she’s 87) and each holiday. She’s in Owensboro, Kentucky, in a modest room with bare walls, which her case worker decorated with the pictures of me and my cats and dogs she printed from my emails. Recently I learned that her nursing home has 16 residents total, eight ladies and eight gentlemen. I was deeply saddened to learn that NONE of the 16 residents have any family. I’m looking ahead to Christmas, with the hope of being able to provide 16 care packages. Attached are Amazon & Target lists of what I’d like to put together, if anyone is inclined to help. It doesn’t sit well with me that they have no one. Their requests are modest. Christmas will look very different for my family this year. I’m trying to move forward finding ways to do good, such as this, to remember my Dad and Steve’s Mom. If anyone can help, I’d appreciate it. Items should be sent to me, and I will assemble gift bags, deliver, and share photos.

Monnetary donations will go towards new blankets & pillows purchased for everyone from Kohl’s and items I’ve bought off the wishlists.
