MARTY UPDATE ❤️
As I suspected, the MRI showed that Marty has a pretty bad inner/middle ear infection in his left ear. 😔
unfortunately, there’s no great way to get a super accurate culture of the area to determine which bacteria is causing the infection. So, we will treat with the most common antibiotic for an ear infection and hope that it works. If there’s no improvement, we can switch medications.
The tricky thing is that Marty’s physical symptoms have subsided a lot. His slight head tilt will very likely be permanent .. so it’s going to be hard to tell for sure if the infection has cleared up. Our plan is that if he stays normal and does not worsen, we will assume that it’s cleared and stop the antibiotics at the end of the course. If any vestibular issue returns, we will know that it has not been cleared and continue antibiotics. The only foolproof way to confirm would be to run another MRI, which is very expensive.
The other downside is that to treat behind the ear drum, he will need oral antibiotics rather than ear drops. He’s actually been getting ear drops too for his external ear infection, which he does so well with! Apparently, inner infections can take a while to clear up, so he needs about 10 weeks of antibiotics, potentially more. 😅
I’m going to add some treats to our wishlist so we can hide his pills in them and hope + pray that I don’t have to physically give him any meds to make him hate me and revert. He’s finally coming out of his shell and I really don’t want to ruin that progress. 😩

We won’t be able to sustain this rescue long-term this way.
