Coyotes and armadillos deserve compassion too.

Often misunderstood and unfairly villainized, coyotes and armadillos play vital roles in our ecosystems. Coyotes help regulate populations of rodents and small mammals — reducing disease and protecting crops and gardens. Armadillos, nature’s quiet diggers, aerate soil, eat harmful insects like fire ants and beetle larvae, and contribute to a healthier environment with every tunnel they build.

Despite their ecological importance, both species are frequently overlooked — or worse, targeted. In a few states they’re not even allowed to receive care in wildlife rehabilitation settings. Injured or orphaned animals are denied help, not because it can’t be given, but because policy refuses them a chance. That’s not just wrong — it’s heartbreaking.

At our rehab, we believe compassion should be rooted in science and empathy — not fear or outdated stereotypes. We provide care to foxes, raccoons, bobcats, and many others. Coyotes and armadillos deserve that same opportunity to heal and return to the wild where they belong.

Please raise your voice. After today’s commission meeting, let them know you support giving these essential species a chance at recovery. Share your support publicly. If you’re able to attend the meeting in person, your presence matters. Be the voice for the voiceless.

This tiny bunny was brought here two days ago after being badly injured by a lawnmower💔 The injuries were too severe and the most compassionate choice was to let this little one go peacefully.

This morning, a kind man found a young raccoon who couldn’t use her back legs and brought her to me for help. I took her to the vet this afternoon, hoping for a better outcome, but the vet confirmed what I feared ~ her back was broken. 💔 Sadly, the most compassionate choice was to let her go peacefully🙏🏻

Some of the babies are taking their first steps toward independence and are learning to lap up formula from a licking pad instead of being hand fed.

There are five little ones total and so far everyone is doing well. The original two are still on antibiotics recovering from sepsis but they’re holding strong and making progress.

🚨 LDWF Proposes Ban on Coyote Rehabilitation August 7🚨

Louisianians, We need your help! Please attend the LDWF Commission meeting August 7th, 9:30 am, this Thursday, to voice your opposition to the proposed ban on the rehabilitation of coyotes in Louisiana. Comments will be part of the public record. We need the LDWF Commission to understand that many citizens oppose this! The wildlife of Louisiana is of the public trust, and what we think should matter! Directly after comments are made on Thursday the commission will vote to oppose or approve this ban.

Coyotes are already stripped of nearly all legal protections in our state. Unlike other wildlife, coyotes can be killed year-round without any bag limits, which means even pregnant moms in spring, and pups during the summer. They get no relief. Now they may be denied even the most basic act of welfare, a chance at recovery when sick, injured, or orphaned.

Through our work with Zelda, Koa, and Ti-Loup, we’ve shown that coyotes are intelligent, sensitive, and vital to healthy ecosystems. Our followers have learned how to coexist with them safely and humanely, through education, not fear.

The proposed coyote rehab ban does nothing to address real community concerns. It’s not a solution nor is it a proactive measure that would help to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. What actually helps? Education. Outreach. Practical coexistence strategies. That’s what we strive to do through our educational efforts, and what LDWF should support.

Attend the public meeting:
🗓️ August 7 | 🕘 9:30 AM
📍 LDWF HQ – 2000 Quail Drive, Baton Rouge

Emailed comments sent before the meeting to commissioners will not be part of the public record, however, those who live too far to attend the meeting can email LDWF and the commission to express their concern.

It’s been a busy Monday morning here…

Three little opossums, all females, were found alone in a yard are now safe and warm in rehab. They appear healthy and strong

And a tiny baby raccoon whose story tugs at the heart even more is here now also. The kind family who found her tried their best to reunite her with her mother, but sadly, mom never returned. She arrived here very dehydrated and weak. She has been given warm subq fluids and is tucked in and safe now

When single babies like this are found my heart always worries that mom may have intentionally left them behind sensing something was wrong ~ nature’s way of protecting the rest of the litter. I’m holding onto hope that’s not the case for this little girl and that with proper care and time she will grow stronger every day.
