Don’t name it ‘til you love it.
If your dog sometimes sits, kind of lies down, or sort of comes when called, then guess what? That behavior isn’t ready for a name yet.

When you slap a cue on a half-learned skill, all you’re doing is labeling confusion. And once you say “Sit” and they do a sloppy wiggle instead? That’s now what “Sit” means to them.

Hold off. Teach it clearly. Make sure your dog knows it cold. Then you name it.

This is how you build reliable cues, not wishful thinking.

“Why won’t my dog listen to me?”
Oh I don’t know… maybe because you’re competing with a whole planet of squirrels, smells, shadows, and the sound of a snack bag crinkling three blocks away.

Dogs aren’t stubborn.
They’re efficient.
They do what works.

If sniffing a bush is more satisfying than listening to your fifth “Sit”… guess who’s getting ghosted?

Want focus?
Make yourself worth focusing on.
Up the treats. Bring the party. Be the most rewarding thing in the universe. Because the universe isn’t planning on playing fair.

Dogs don’t just speak with their bodies—they read ours, too. That means we’re always communicating, whether we realize it or not.

If your dog barks at something and you respond by yelling, they don’t hear, “Stop that.” They hear, “You’re right! This is scary!”

Your energy matters. Your posture, tone, and breathing all send a message. So when things get chaotic, take a beat. Breathe. Be the calm you want your dog to feel.

It’s not always easy—we’re human. But staying grounded in tough moments is a skill worth practicing. For you and for them.

A marker is something that indicates a reward is about to come. We use them to tell a dog that out of all the things they were doing, “that” specific behavior is what earned them something good. You can use verbal markers like a word. Or you can use a mechanical one like a clicker. Even though it means having an extra tool to carry around, I prefer the consistency and effectiveness of a clicker. It’s a pretty satisfying process.
