Absolutely no style of training, no method, no trainer, no program, no series - there's nothing out there that you can take and say 'follow that step by step' and you'll get your dog. It doesn't work.

There's some that are out there marketed that way. I don't believe in it.

Because for a long time, with a lot of dogs - there's not a dog here that I've trained the same way. They're all pretty similar, but none of them are the same.

That's the whole point.

A program might give you a framework. A trainer might give you the principles. A series might give you the tools. But the actual training - the part where YOU put your hands on YOUR dog - that's something you build by reading the dog in front of you, not by checking boxes someone else printed for you.

The best you can do is learn from everyone you can, run the dog in front of you, and adjust when the dog tells you to. That's how every dog in our kennel got trained - and not one of them got there the same way!

The goal isn't to teach dogs to heel well on lead. It's to teach them to heel well off lead. I don't want the lead in the way.

So how do I get there - with no pressure?

It's understanding the position.

That's why we built the DogBone Adjustable Leader. It gives you the ability to do pressure on, pressure off - you get that bite effect. Pressure on, pressure off. The dog learns the position with feedback in real time.

But eventually, I'm gonna take this off. I'm not gonna put the lead on anymore. I want the weight of this to hang so they feel like I got them - because I'm slowly transitioning to no lead at all.

If you want your training session to stick, put the dog in the kennel and let them soak up what they just learned. DO NOT let the dog go crazy and run free after you are done with your training session or everything you just learned will go in one ear, and out the other!

Tennis balls - a high value and great tool for any dog trainer.

The day prior in our group, lot of dogs made retrieves - only with tennis balls. They weren't really interested in the dummy quite yet. Just wasn't high enough value for them.

The tennis ball? They'll play that.

So I'll build off that. I'll take it and figure out how to build the drive on the retrieve. Get the dog moving first. Get them committed to the bring-back. Then we worry about transitioning to the dummy down the road.

Tennis balls are real high value. But the nice thing about them is you see how that - two little squirts of scent and it soaks right in. Now they're not just a fetch toy, they're a scent tool too.

Put one in a Chuck-It and skip it across the ground - it'll lay a beautiful scent trail.

Take a tennis racket and smack it - it bounces sporadically, which makes the dog track.

Super high reward, takes scent, launches a mile, and bounces unpredictable. You're not going to find another five-dollar piece of gear that does this much work in this much of your training!

The drill that 4 million people watched and called 'gaslighting' is actually one of the ways we build trust between our hunting dog and the handler - and it works because the dog learns we're never wrong! This drill is the "Hunt Command".

Here's the drill people called gaslighting:

I put her in an area and tell her to hunt. There's nothing there. She'll check back with me a couple times like 'It's not here, Dad.' I tell her: no, hunt. She comes back. No, hunt.

About the time I think she might give up on me, I get one in there without her seeing it.

Now she works through the cover, hits the scent, finds it, and looks back at me like 'You were right again, Dad. You're never wrong.'

That's the whole point.

This isn't about tricking the dog. It's about a dog learning that when I tell her to hunt, she hunts. When I tell her something is there, something is there - even if it takes her a minute to find it.

This is a touchy drill. You have to read the dog. You have to know when she's tired, frustrated, or actually giving up versus just needing one more rep to commit. That's all body language - and it's the difference between a dog that trusts you and a dog you've pushed too far.

Get this part right and you've got a dog that hunts hard for you anywhere, anytime.

Every time the puppy picks something up is an opportunity to develop the "retrieve", even if it's your wifes shoes.

They are always learning, so you need to always be training. Keep this mindset with your little puppy, and it will help you tremendously.

Don't play tug of war with a young retriever and then wonder why they won't release the dummy at six months old, or the pheasant down the road. Every rep of tug is a rep teaching them the exact opposite of what we're going to ask of them in the field!

Think about what tug of war actually trains.

The dog grips down. The dog refuses to release. The dog pulls back when you pull. The dog wins the contest by holding on harder.

Now think about what we want from a retriever.

Soft mouth on the bird. Clean delivery to your hand. Release on cue, not on contest. No competition over the object - the bird isn't theirs, it's yours, and they're just bringing it to you.

Tug builds every habit we have to undo. Every minute of tug is a minute training the dog to do the exact opposite of a proper retrieve.

People play it because it tires the puppy out and feels like bonding. There are a hundred other ways to wear them out and bond with them that don't sabotage their gun dog work.

Save tug for the dog you're not asking to deliver birds to hand. With your retriever, skip it - your future self at force fetch will thank you!
