Christmas Eve PSA 🦌 🦷 🎄 : Save a reindeer and say “no” to antlers! Many dog owners give antlers, bones, nylabones, etc as long lasting chews—but they can pose a real risk to your dog’s teeth. Antlers and other bones are extremely hard, and the pressure from chewing can fracture your dog’s teeth, especially the large chewing molars in the back of the mouth as seen in the photos. These fractures can be painful and can lead to tooth root abscesses if not dealt with. The rule of thumb for chews is, if you can’t put a fingernail indent into the chew, then it is too hard. Your dog’s smile matters—choosing safer chews such as rubber chew toys or veterinary approved dental chews can prevent pain and an expensive dental trip!

Important Update: Kennel Cough Cases Are Rising!

We’ve recently seen a significant increase in kennel cough (canine infectious respiratory disease) cases in our community. To help keep your pets safe, we want to provide some important information about this contagious illness.

Kennel cough is similar to a human cold and spreads quickly wherever dogs gather, like at groomers, dog parks, boarding facilities, and even during playdates.

Common Symptoms to Watch For:

A persistent, dry, hacking cough

Gagging or retching

Sneezing and nasal discharge

Lethargy or a mild fever

Keep Your Pet Protected:

Vaccinate: The Bordetella vaccine is highly effective at reducing the risk and severity of the illness.

Avoid Risk: Keep your dog away from high-risk areas if they are not fully vaccinated.

Isolate Sick Pets: If your dog is showing symptoms, keep them home and away from other dogs.

Maintain Hygiene: Regularly clean your dog’s food bowls, water bowls, and toys.

Even indoor dogs can get kennel cough if they have any contact with other dogs. If you notice your dog is unwell or if you need to check their vaccine status, please call us at 703-389-9335.
