We hope everyone has a Happy Easter weekend. ✝️

Today, on Good Friday, we remember that even when the world seems dark and hope is lost, Jesus is our light, our Savior. 💛

In the world of veterinary medicine, we deal with loss, heartache, and tough conversations. Those days can get heavy. Leaning on faith and trusting the Lord to walk with us through the hard days is what pushes us through to the next patient, to the next day. And keeping our eyes on the goodness brings those moments of joy, those blessings when the Lord shows us His promises. Somes days are filled with grief and loss, and some are filled with new beginnings and celebrations. Even through our darkest days, God's light can shine through and give us hope for a brighter tomorrow. ❤️

One option we provide for heartworm prevention is our injectable heartworm prevention. This comes in the form of either ProHeart 6 or ProHeart 12. An injectable form of heartworm prevention that lasts for months up to a year is a great alternative to oral heartworm preventions. No matter what, some dogs will just not want to take their oral meds unless a wrestling match is involved, while it can also be a lot easier to remember a twice a year or once a year vet appointment vs giving your dog a pill every month. If you're interested in getting your dog on an injectable heartworm prevention, give us a call!

The American Heartworm Society estimates that more than a million pets in the U.S. have heartworms. But heartworm disease is preventable. This can be easily done by getting your dog into the clinic and having a heartworm test done yearly, as well as keeping them on some type of heartworm prevention year-round. The American Heartworm Society also recommends reduction of exposure to mosquitoes through standard environmental control of mosquitoes and their breeding environments, and when possible, reducing outdoor exposure during key mosquito feeding periods.

Living in the south, sometimes it can be impossible to control our environments from being mosquito free, which makes it so much more important to continue having your dog on heartworm prevention year-round, as mosquitoes are the way that heartworms are transmitted. Watch for our post next week as we break down the types of heartworm preventions we offer!

Spring is here and the grass is green, and yes we've already seen some laminitic ponies due to grass founder! 🙀 Here's some good information about laminitis, and as always if you have questions about your horse or ponies, call us to schedule an appointment! 🐴

DO YOU KNOW WHAT CAUSES GRASS FOUNDER?

Spring is a wonderful time of the year, but it may be the beginning of some serious problems for horses vulnerable to grass founder — like horses that are over the age of 10, easy keepers, overweight or cresty-necked.

Laminitis or founder, as it is commonly called, is inflammation of the laminae of the horse’s foot. Laminae are the delicate, accordion-like tissues that attach the inner surface of the hoof wall to the coffin bone (the bone in the foot). A horse suffering from laminitis experiences a decrease in blood flow to the laminae, which in turn begin to die and separate. The final result is hoof wall separation, rotation of the coffin bone and extreme pain. In severe cases, the coffin bone will actually rotate through the sole of the horse’s hoof where it becomes infected and can ultimately lead to the horse having to be euthanized.

Laminitis can be triggered by different causes, like repeated concussion on hard ground (road founder), grain overload, retained placenta, hormonal imbalance (Cushing’s syndrome), obesity, and lush grass.

In cases of grass founder, the sugar fructans produced by rapidly growing grass stimulates an overgrowth of bacteria in the horse’s large intestine. The bacteria produce and release toxins (endotoxins) that are carried by the bloodstream to the foot where they cause damage to the laminae and small blood vessels.

The best way to deal with laminitis is preventing and managing the causes under your control. Consult your equine practitioner for further information and to formulate a plan tailored to your horse's individual situation. If you suspect laminitis, consider it a medical emergency and notify your veterinarian immediately.

February marks the start of pet dental month! Our pet’s dental health is vital for their overall health and quality of life. A diseased or painful mouth can prevent your pet from enjoying daily activities, reduce their appetite, and even lead to more serious health conditions. But most dental disease is preventable with regular, at-home maintenance and professional dental cleanings.

Here at DeSoto Vet we have several products to help you with at-home maintenance for your pet's dental care, including water additives, dental chews, toothpaste and toothbrushes. We will happily also schedule you for an exam if you have any concerns with your pet's mouth.

We had a cele-purdy come through our clinic today! Meet Roxie, the only full blooded Maine C**n we’ve ever seen come through our doors. Roxie is only a little over a year of age, but as you can already see, a Maine C**n is the largest domestic cat breed and can weigh up to 17 lbs more than other cats. Maine C**ns have long coats and come in many different varieties of colors, just like Roxie here. They are also known as the gentle giants because of their size and temperament, although they are playful and can even enjoy playing fetch! Thank you so much to Connie Kay Barnes for bringing Ms. Roxie in today!
