It's not very often that an animal in need of help goes directly to the place it needs to go for help. Sometimes they are able to find someone who will take them to get help, which is great, and greatly needed! But, I've had animals in need show up at my door, and more than once!
Probably the craziest one was a pigeon who had been shot, and walked all the way to my driveway... The poor guy had been shot in the chest, then the bullet came out of the other side of his chest, and then through his wing--at the joint!
Even most veterinarians would have just euthanized him! I admit, I considered it. I mean, every time I gave him water through a tube, water would just pour directly out of his chest! I didn't want him to die of dehydration!
But Autumn insisted I save him. So, I kept tubing him, kept him warm, and before I knew it, one hole completely closed up! Then the next one closed up! It was truly amazing. There was absolutely no way to fix his wing, meaning he would never be able to be released back to the wild.
As a wildlife rehabilitator, I know that it is my responsibility to ensure any animal I rehabilitate is either released in good health, or given a forever home. This pigeon was MY responsibility, and so he has stayed with us.
He is appropriately named "Miracle."
I know people love to hate pigeons, but not me! I love hearing him and his companion, Faith, "coo." It's actually soothing to me!
At the time Miracle came to us asking for help, we lived in a cookie-cutter neighborhood.
Now we live outside city limits, literally across the fence from a National Forest. And it amazes me how animals in need still find me! ❤️
