As we continue celebrating 70 years of Hawthorne Animal Hospital, we’re looking back at the people who helped make Hawthorne such a special place through the decades. 💙

This throwback features Ruth, a member of our team during the days of our old building. While the surroundings may look a little different from the Hawthorne you know today, the dedication to our patients and their families was just as strong then as it is now.

Every person who has been part of our team has contributed to the Hawthorne story, and we’re grateful for employees like Ruth who helped build the foundation for 70 years of compassionate veterinary care.

🌧️🐾 After the Rain Comes Hidden Danger for Your Pet 🐾🌧️

A summer rainstorm might cool things off, but it can also leave behind hazards many pet owners don't think about.

Before your dog splashes through puddles or explores standing water, keep these risks in mind:

🦟 Mosquitoes – Standing water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of heartworm disease, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that is much easier to prevent than treat.

🦠 Leptospirosis – This serious bacterial infection can be spread through contaminated water and wildlife urine.

🟢 Blue-Green Algae – Some ponds and lakes can develop harmful algae blooms that are toxic—and even deadly—to pets.

🐛 Parasites & Bacteria – Stagnant water can harbor organisms that can make your pet sick.

The safest choice? Keep pets away from standing water whenever possible, and make sure they're protected with year-round heartworm prevention.

This photo features Sherry—better known to so many as "Funston"—taking an X-ray in our original hospital. Long before today's digital technology, every image required skill, patience, and a dedication to providing the very best care for our patients.

For decades, team members like Funston worked behind the scenes, playing an essential role in diagnosing injuries, helping veterinarians make critical decisions, and caring for countless pets who came through our doors.

We're proud of how far veterinary medicine has come, but we're even prouder of the people whose hard work and compassion built the foundation for everything we do today.

🐱💧 Is Your Cat Drinking Enough Water? 💧🐱

Cats are notorious for not drinking enough water—and during the hot summer months, staying hydrated becomes even more important.

Because cats naturally have a low thirst drive, dehydration can sneak up on them and contribute to urinary issues, kidney problems, and other health concerns.

Here are a few easy ways to encourage your cat to drink more:

💧 Place multiple water bowls throughout your home.
🚰 Try a pet water fountain—many cats prefer running water.
🥣 Add canned food to their diet to increase moisture intake.
🧊 Drop a few ice cubes into their water bowl for a refreshing treat.
🧼 Wash water bowls daily and refill with fresh, cool water.

Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration, including:
