We focus on rehabilitating and advocating for the city's most overlooked dogs.

Yesterday, on our way to Gary Animal Control, a truck pulled out in front of us on Route 130 and hit us.

The impact sent our car spinning, nearly into the barbed wire fence at the compost site. It was terrifying. Thankfully, no dogs were in our car.

This car has carried so many of Gary's dogs to foster homes, vet appointments, and their forever families. It has been part of the everyday work that makes DASH possible since the beginning. Now it's most likely totaled, and losing it leaves us without the transportation we depend on to help these dogs.

But the dogs at animal control are still waiting, and our adoptable dogs still have families to meet. While we figure out what comes next, we need:

Drivers with a reliable vehicle to take dogs to foster homes, vet appointments, and adoption meetings.

Volunteers to help with meet and greets.

If you can help, please message us with your availability. Even one trip makes a difference. If you can't, sharing this post helps us find the people who can.

We're still processing all of this. Thank you for showing up for us and for Gary's dogs, especially on the hard days.

🐾💛 BLAZE IS STILL LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME 💛🐾

Meet Blaze, a sweet boy who is just 12 weeks old. Look at that face. 🥺

His ears haven't agreed on a direction yet, his bandana is just a little crooked, and in this photo he has one paw firmly on his blue toy. Nobody is taking that toy. Nobody.

All he needs now is someone to grow up with. Could it be yours?

🐾🎉 CLYDE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING! 🎉🐾

Gary Animal Control, it's been real, but Clyde has places to be. Specifically: the kitchen. 😂

Less than a minute in a real home and he's already sitting front and center with his new dog friends, giving the stare. You know the one. The "I have never been fed in my life" stare. He's a natural.

And bath time? Clyde hopped right into the tub like the good boy he is. 🛁 Honestly, some of us could learn from him. (Video for proof.)

For the first time, this sweet boy gets to decompress at his own pace, nap on something soft, and just be a dog.

Dave and Elena, thank you for saying yes to Clyde and opening your home once again to this sweet angel. 💛 And a big thank you to the officers at Gary Animal Control for taking care of him until his day came.

CALLING ALL RESCUES

There are good dogs waiting at Gary Animal Control who deserve homes, and we need more rescue partners to help them get there.

DASH works directly with Gary Animal Control to place dogs into foster and adoptive homes, but we do not have enough fosters and adopters to meet the need. More dogs need placement than we currently have homes for, and we cannot do this alone.

We're reaching out to local rescue organizations who'd like to help Gary's dogs find their second chance. DASH is in the kennels every day, so we can share photos, behavior notes, and everything we know about each dog, and connect your rescue with Gary Animal Control to arrange a pull.

Please share this post and tag rescue groups you know. These dogs deserve a chance, and we need your help reaching the people who can give them one.

🎉🐾 TOMMY EGAN IS HOME!!! 🐾🎉

Our hearts are SO full. 🥹

When Tommy came out of Gary Animal Control, he needed more than a place to stay. He needed someone to believe in him. His fosters did exactly that. They loved him, cared for him, and patiently brought this sweet boy back to life. 💚

Look at him now: relaxed, loved, and giving his new family a little tongue-out blep for the camera. 😛 That's what a second chance looks like.

To Tommy's fosters: every good day ahead of him started in your home. Thank you for giving him everything. ❤️

And to Tommy's new family: thank you for choosing him. We can't wait to watch him thrive.

ADOPTING THROUGH DASH: READ BEFORE YOU APPLY

This applies to all DASH dogs, whether they are already in a DASH foster home or still at Gary Animal Control.

Applying first does not mean adopting first. Each dog is placed with the home best suited to their needs, and we take the time necessary to make thoughtful matches. Our goal is to find homes where these dogs can succeed. Gary's dogs have been overlooked long enough. Their next home needs to be their last. Please read this in full before submitting an application.

WHO WE ARE

DASH Dogs And Second Homes is an animal welfare organization working directly and exclusively with Gary Animal Control. Gary Animal Control is a division of the police department, and the city does not handle adoptions or foster placements. DASH fills that role, so all applications and placements are processed through us.

AVAILABLE DOGS

Dogs in DASH foster homes are listed on our website. DOGS AT GARY ANIMAL CONTROL ARE NOT LISTED ON OUR WEBSITE, but every dog we post from animal control is available for BOTH foster and adoption through DASH. If we post a dog, you can apply for them.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Current pets MUST be spayed or neutered and up to date on DHPP, rabies, and heartworm, flea and tick prevention. Applications from homes with pets behind on care will not be approved.

Everyone in your household should agree to adopting.

If you rent, confirm your landlord allows the dog, including any breed, size or pet restrictions.

Plan for the ongoing cost of food, veterinary care, prevention and training, and the time a dog needs from you.

Read the dog's bio in full. Age, energy level, behavior, medical needs and compatibility with other animals all matter. Requirements listed in a bio, such as no cats or no young children, are firm.

THE APPLICATION

A comment or message does not replace an application. Tell us about your household, current pets, daily routine and experience with dogs, including any concerns or limitations. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval or reserve a dog.

AFTER YOU APPLY

Please allow up to 72 hours for our team to review your application and reach out. For dogs at Gary Animal Control, we often respond sooner, as these dogs are at risk. Watch for calls, texts and emails, and reply promptly. If we cannot reach you, we will move forward with another applicant. If your plans change, please let us know.

MEET AND GREET

An approved application is required before any meet and greet. Once your application is approved, we will schedule a meet and greet and discuss any introductions needed with resident dogs. Because our dogs are in different locations, all visits must be arranged in advance through DASH.

Meet and greets for dogs at Gary Animal Control are by appointment only. Animal control is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on weekends.

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT GARY ANIMAL CONTROL ABOUT A DOG. All placements are handled through DASH.

ADOPTION AND FOSTER-TO-ADOPT

After a successful meet and greet, you may adopt that day or join our foster-to-adopt program. Foster-to-adopt requires you to make a final decision to adopt within 7 days.

Taking a dog home is a commitment. Once a dog leaves Gary Animal Control, they cannot return. DASH does not have a facility, and we are committed to every dog that leaves the facility through us. If you change your mind, we must find another foster to step up for that dog. Please be certain before taking a dog home.

Dogs are not reserved during the process. All adoption paperwork and payment must be completed through DASH, and any foster-to-adopt arrangement must be approved and documented by DASH before the dog goes home.

WHAT EVERY DASH DOG RECEIVES

Every dog is vaccinated, spayed or neutered, microchipped and given parasite prevention before adoption, along with any additional care needed.

Every dog is spayed or neutered before going home and before any adoption is finalized. This includes puppies. There are no exceptions.

ADOPTION FEES

The following fees apply to dogs in DASH foster homes:
Puppies: $300
Adult dogs: $200
Senior dogs: $100
Long-stay dogs: $100

Fees for dogs adopted directly from Gary Animal Control differ and will be discussed during the adoption process.

Adoption fees are waived for all Gary first responders, including police officers, firefighters and EMTs.

AFTER YOUR DOG COMES HOME

A new home means unfamiliar people, routines and smells. Your dog will need patience, structure, supervision and time to decompress. Reach out early with any questions or concerns so we can help.

If another home is a better fit for the dog you applied for, your application can still be considered for others. Ask us. Not ready to adopt? Foster. You provide the home. We provide the supplies.

🚨 3 DAYS TO PAY A $3,476 VET BILL 🚨

Chewy update! 💚 Just over a week ago, this sweet girl was in the hospital in critical condition. Today she's home with her foster, recovering and doing GREAT, and she's taken full ownership of the couch. 🛋️🐾

Thank you to her amazing foster, her vet team, and everyone who shared, donated, and rooted for her. You helped get her here.

Now we need help paying for the care that saved her. 13 supporters have already given $986. We need $2,490 more by November 1.

Our full goal is $9,000, covering Chewy's bill, spay/neuter surgeries for 13 dogs still waiting, and room to say yes to the next dog at Gary Animal Control.
