Our Largemouth Bass have been busy the past few months with the spring spawn. In January, we prepared for this by bringing up our brooder fish and determining their gender. We also took this time to send off samples for DNA testing for the Florida Bass gene. This allows us to effectively track how many male and female fish are in each pond as well as their genetics. Once the spawn happens, we can analyze the productivity of the fish as well as inform the client of the progeny’s genetic potential.

It’s no secret, droughts are tough on ponds. Low water levels cause water quality problems. Unfortunately, we have had an abundance of fish kills this year. However, when Mother Nature hands you lemons, you make lemonade. We recommend taking advantage of the low water levels and cleaning out the shallow areas of your pond that are traditionally w**d problems. Once the rains return, you will be glad you did.
