WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NEW WORLD SCREWWORM : (common questions and answers)

New World Screwworm has now been detected in Texas. Since the cases have been reported we have had several questions from clients.

New world screwworm is carried by screwworm flies and leads to aggressive maggot infestation that attacks living tissue. FACT: Not all maggot infestations are new world screwworms. Maggot infestations can also be carried by other flies such as bot flies. Adult screwworm flies have a relatively limited flight range (approximately 3 miles), so long-distance spread often occurs through the movement of infested animals or contaminated vehicles and equipment.

FACT: Screwworms infestations have not been detected in Kansas.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? At this time, fly control is essential as well as monitoring and covering any wounds to prevent flies from laying eggs. Pay close attention to umbilical sites and continue normal care of areas.

Screwworm is a reportable disease. Contact your veterinarian and the appropriate animal health authorities immediately if you suspect a case.

Prevention, early recognition, and prompt reporting are our best tools to protect horses and livestock.

Wednesday at Countryside got a whole lot cuter thanks to Skid the Pig! 🐷🌸

Skid belongs to our receptionist, Jen, and today he came to work dressed in the sweetest little floral outfit, knowing he had a full schedule of very important front desk business to attend to. His responsibilities included boosting morale, supervising snack breaks, and charming every single person who walked through the door.

Safe to say he absolutely stole the spotlight today. 💕
