Many times, people get frustrated when a veterinarian can’t diagnose their pet unseen over the phone. Whenever you ask a question, thinking it may have a simple answer, such as, “My dog didn’t want their food today,” or “What can I give him for an upset stomach because he didn’t eat today?” or “He seems less active than usual.” The answer is always going to be that you need to have your dog seen in person by a veterinarian. Yes, you may spend money on a vet bill only to find out that your dog is gassy, but it could also be a serious, life-threatening problem that you had no idea about. Case in point: I noticed Bodie, our Rottweiler, did not eat his breakfast right away today and looked a little off. When he did not eat his dinner, we immediately knew something was going on and started assessing him. Matt did an ultrasound and found that he was bleeding internally, which, of course, resulted in us performing emergency surgery on him. Bodie is 9 years old and in peak physical condition with no known health problems. Upon opening him up, we found that he had a mass on his spleen that had caused it to completely rupture, and his entire abdominal cavity was full of blood. Yesterday, he was acting completely normal. Had we waited to start examining him, he would not have survived the night. This is why it’s so important that when a veterinarian says to take your dog to be seen by the emergency vet or urgent care vet, it’s for this exact reason. They don’t know if your dog is just gassy or if an unknown, life-threatening complication has happened. 
Animals do not show pain and discomfort the way we do so always trust your gut instinct and pay attention to even small changes in their behavior.
