We've been on this homesteading journey off and on for the past 15 or so years; time, children, and home moves have changed how that's looked. In 2020, the page was created to share our experience with others and help to teach along the way. In 2021 we purchased our forever home which has led us to finally reach for the goals that we didn't logistically have the space for. Now we have added new go

als that we'd like to achieve by the beginning of 2023. The various things we produce here are mainly grown in the path to self-sufficiency but we do offer small quantities of those things. We're happy to help with any questions and if we don't have the ability to help you with what you need then we can certainly point you in the right direction!

I want to hear about all of YOU and how you ended up with your Farm or Homestead name! I'll share how ours came about and we'd love to hear about yours. I know we all have a story.

When the FB page was originally started in 2020 we were "Guidroz Urban Homestead." We had been living the lifestyle on and off for many years and as our living situations evolved so did our homesteading. It was absolutely fitting for what we were doing but when the time came to get our LLC and expand officially, we had to make a name change.

Unfortunately in Louisiana due to our homestead exemption taxes, you cannot LLC a business with homestead in the name. We were under a time crunch and opted to go with something simple.

Guidroz Family Farm was the choice because that's what it is...a small family run farm. It's only Aaron, Myself, and Lane here running things as our other two children are grown and "flown the coop." Our oldest does her own garden, chickens, and bread baking now. Our middle one is a mechanic but when he was still living at home, helped greatly with building our infrastructure. They've all played their parts and we hope in the future we'll be able to have them involved again as their busy lives allow.

So now tell me about your farm or homestead name and how it came to be. ❤️

When we started homesteading the goal was always raising food. That's still the goal but the way that happens has ebbed and flowed through the years. The main protein producer here remains Coturnix quail.

I know many of you follow us specifically BECAUSE of our quail. We absolutely raise them as a multipurpose homestead animal! We enjoy them and their personalities, we enjoy the eggs when we have them for personal use, and we enjoy them as a meat producer.

Some of you raise them strictly as pets and that's ok too! Don't think that we don't have our favorites around here!

Since we DO hatch many eggs we have to have a plan for the males. Anytime you're raising an animal for production you'll need to have a plan for the birds that don't stay in your program. For us that plan is our freezer; we believe in the philosophy of a good life with only one 30 bad seconds.

We also believe in using all parts of an animal when possible. Every single part of a quail is used on our farm. We dehydrated quail wings for dog training recently, we make quail jerky dog treats, and many of you have received those little quail feather earrings in your packages. Not a single part goes unused.

A lot of this is to say that there's no wrong way to homestead. We all do things differently and that doesn't make it wrong or right. You do what works best for your farm, homestead, or family.

📢 Question time for the gardeners!

It doesn't want to stop raining! 🌧️ That usually forces us to take some down time but today we were out there working because we have some project deadlines. (You'll see that soon enough 😉)

I pulled out a little throwback photo to our 2019 garden which has me wondering...is there anything special you're looking to plant in 2026?

I'm almost out of Luffas so it's probably time to grow some more. I also skipped my blue butterfly pea flowers and yard long beans this year. I think I'll add them back for 2026.

I'll be in year two of my growing cohort with the Utopian Seed Project so Promiscuous Peas get a special spot.

Most of our peppers will overwinter just fine so I likely won't start seeds for those. Tomatoes are ALWAYS my favorite crop and I can't wait to get my hands in the seed box and pick out this year's varieties.

So tell me what you THINK is on your grow list this year! Anything you really love ❤️ and would recommend? Did you have any varieties that really stood out this past year?

Since it's been raining ☔for two days and our yard looks like it has a symbiotic relationship with the bayou...here's an egg picture. 🐣 I'm hoping to bring back your regularly scheduled aesthetic pictures but we seem to be in the monsoon part of "winter." There's absolutely no shortage of mud and I'm sure many of you can relate! What all are you working on inside? 🤔 I have quail feather earrings to restock and soap 🫧 on my list of projects.

*quail 💩* and I apologize for it often! "Sorry, I was working in the quail barn." 🫣🤣

There comes a moment in every farm person’s life when you must accept a hard truth:

You carry a… scent.
Not a smell.
A scent.
A multilayered aromatic experience.

I walk into public places smelling like:
– fresh straw
– calf kisses
– a hint of iodine
– a dash of despair
– and the lingering ghost of milk replacer dust

Basically, I am a walking charcuterie board of barn odors.

And yet — YET — I insist on acting shocked when people notice.

---
So I’m standing in line, minding my own business, radiating barn fumes like a biological hazard, when a stranger leans in and goes:

“Wow…you smell like a farm.”

And this is the moment where any normal human would respond with grace. Something like:

“Oh haha yeah, sorry, just got done working,”
or
“I’ll shower when I get home.”

But my brain?
My brain heard that, panicked, yeeted itself out the nearest window, and left my mouth completely unsupervised.

So what do I say?

“Thanks, you too.”

YOU. TOO.

YOU.
TOO.

I hit this innocent, freshly-showered civilian with the most accidental barn insult ever created.

They smelled like laundry detergent and hopes and dreams — and I told them THANKS YOU TOO
as if THEY were the ones walking around like a feral goat in Carhartt.

The moment the words left my mouth, even the angels were like, “…girl what.”

---
And the silence afterward?
Violent.
Traumatizing.
Biblical.

They stared at me like they were trying to figure out if I was joking or if I actually believed they smelled like cow manure and broken ambitions.

I tried to fix it, but my brain was still rebooting, so all that came out was:

“Ha…haha…yeah.”

YEAH WHAT.
WHAT WAS YEAH SUPPOSED TO MEAN.
Why am I like this??

---
Meanwhile I am standing there in full-blown farm aroma glory. I smell like I lost a wrestling match with a calf and also maybe rolled in a compost pile for fun.

My socks are questionable.
My hoodie is an archaeological site.
There is absolutely hay in my hair.
If someone slapped a “Live Animal” sticker on my back, TSA would wave me through.

And I told a totally normal, clean-smelling citizen:
“Thanks, you too.”

I should not be allowed in public without supervision.

---
New rule:

If you see me anywhere that isn’t a barn, please assume:

1. I can’t smell myself anymore

2. I definitely smell like cow

3. If you comment on it, I WILL say something feral and deeply embarrassing in response, and then I will flee the premises.

I am done apologizing for the scent.
It is part of my personality now.
It has fused with my soul.

If you don’t like it?
Thanks, you too.

So glad you love them!
