The more you know, the better!

Recently, a friend (and brand new milk tester!) asked me to explain a few details from her milk test results.
To my surprise, I couldn’t confidently explain what SNF was — so I took the opportunity to dig in and educate myself.

Turns out, even when you’ve been doing this for a while, there’s always something new to learn — and I love that about this journey! 🐐📊💡

🧬 Solids-Not-Fat (SNF)
This is the portion of the milk that includes everything except water and fat — basically, it’s the nutritional backbone of milk, minus the cream.

🧪 SNF Includes:
Proteins (casein, whey, etc.)
Lactose (milk sugar)
Minerals (like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium)
Vitamins
Ash content (the inorganic mineral residue)

🐐 Why It Matters:
Higher SNF = more nutrient-dense milk
Important for cheesemaking (because it's what gives structure and yield)
Often used in evaluating milk quality, especially in dairy production

In Nigerian Dwarf goats — who are known for high butterfat, but also great SNF — strong SNF numbers often signal excellent milk for cheese, soap, and overall richness.

📈 What's a Good SNF Value?
Typical SNF values for Nigerian Dwarfs might range between 8.0–9.5%, depending on diet, genetics, and lactation stage. Higher = better for most purposes.

If your report also includes fat % and protein %, you’re sitting on some valuable data to evaluate your does' production quality!

We added Miss Dixie to our family/ program over the weekend! As Bella heads toward retirement Dixie will be our new breeding female for our small program! Thank you KN Mini/Toy Aussies for the oppotunity to own her. We love her!
