October 1st is National Black Dog Day! It’s a day to get the word out and encourage people to adopt black dogs, who often get left behind in shelters just because of the color of their fur.

“Black Dog Syndrome” is a phenomenon where black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals. Black dogs are more likely to be euthanized in shelters regardless of their breed.

Some say it’s because they look scary or angry, or you can’t read their expressions as easily, or they don’t look as good in photos because they are harder to photograph well.

Help break those stereotypes and spread the truth on National Black Dog Day, October 1st. These dogs deserve loving homes just as much as dogs of any other color! Got a black dog? Please post your photos and share!

Very important when bringing a new pet home!

‼️DECOMPRESSION‼️

Let’s talk about decompression. This may be a term that is not known to a lot of adopters. Many of the volunteers hadn’t heard of it until we fostered for various rescues.

You have visited the shelter with your current dog and picked out and adopted your new best friend. They did great at the shelter on what was neutral territory. Now what? Hopefully when you brought your new companion home you had a crate for him or her so that your current dog and your new dog were not thrown together in the back seat of the vehicle. If not, hopefully all went well.

Now you are at home on the territory (home) of your current dog. How might they react to each other now? How will the new dog that doesn’t know this place react? They don’t know the rules. They don’t know where they are allowed to go and not go. This is where DECOMPRESSION is needed. This is a gift to your new dog. This WILL help reduce the number of failed adoptions.

Decompression is a minimum of two weeks. Sometimes, it may take longer if you have a scared or very stressed dog. You do not need to take a bunch of time off work to “be there” for decompression. The first week, your new companion (dog) should mostly be in a crate, resting. They go out to go potty. They are always leashed when they leave the crate. Current dogs are placed where the current dog and the new dog will not meet. During this time their cortisol (stress) hormones will decrease. This is part of the time that you develop a routine. Routine is GOOD. Dogs like routine.

During decompression limit interactions with children. Dogs are NOT to be left alone with children. No new people or no new places. Walk your new dog at home. No dog parks, no pet stores, no going over to your friends or neighbors with the new dog. Do NOT introduce to current pets until decompression is over. You can switch blankets or other items to allow the current dog and new dog to get used to each other's smell. After decompression introduce your new dog to other dogs outdoors, not in the home. You can do this by having one person walk the dog down the street while a second person walks current dogs down the street on the opposite side of the street. Bring them closer together. If they seem fine you can continue walking. If anyone shows stress move them further apart and then bring back together. Structure, guidance, routine and rules will provide the best route too a confident and balanced dog.

Here are links to a few websites that have more on decompression. You can also use your favorite web browser and simply search “decompression for dogs”.

Nearly 140 pet collars were recovered from the Lake Lure Rainbow Bridge. Now many are asking if the collar they placed on the bridge is one of the items that were found in the Helene debris.
A Lake Lure Flowering Bridge volunteer cataloged each and every collar. Amy Wald, thank you for your labor of love and painstaking work.
