Goodbye, Daniel

This is the outcome every rescuer dreads most, but losing my sweet, six-year-old Daniel feels unbearable. My heart is completely shattered. He wasn’t just another rescue cat in our care—he was my baby from day one.

I hand-raised Daniel from birth. When his momma pushed him out of the nest far earlier than his siblings, I stepped in, and from that moment on, my lap became his permanent safe haven.

I knew right away he was going to be a true "Velcro Cat." Back then, I spent my days making jewelry—beading, macrame, and wire wrapping. I kept my current projects on a large plastic tray under the couch that I’d pull onto my lap to work. Daniel would climb up and simply flop his little body directly across the tray, totally indifferent to whatever he was covering. I’d be scrambling in a panic to move beading needles and thread, desperately trying to keep tiny cups of beads from spilling everywhere. I couldn't help being a little annoyed at times, but mostly I was just terrified he’d get hurt, and besides, who can be mad at a precious kitten seeking love?? 🥹 Daniel is a huge reason I eventually shelved my jewelry making—a creative outlet I still miss dearly.

Because he had to be weaned way too early, those lap visits turned into comforting suckling sessions. His entire life, he would climb into my lap multiple times EVERY.SINGLE.DAY, curl into a tight kitty doughnut, and knead my tummy, arms, legs—whatever he could reach—while suckling his own tail. It melted me every single time. He would gaze right up into my eyes, and if he sensed I wasn't paying enough attention to our cuddle session, he’d lift his head, push his sweet little face right into mine—“Hey Mom, pay attention!”—and only go back to suckling once he was sure he had my full devotion.

He was bursting with fire and personality. He adored getting his cheeks and chin combed; all I had to do was hold up the comb across the room and he’d come zooming in seconds. The rattle of a treat container sent him racing just as fast. On days when treat service wasn't prompt enough, he’d start climbing the kitchen appliances—perching on top of the upright freezer, scaling bookshelves, or leaping onto the curtain rods to dash across the room from up high. 😅 That's personality!

At night, his chosen spot was curled half on my hip bone & half on a pillow I would place there for him. I feel the crushing weight of his absence there. Last night, I couldn't even bring myself to lie down; I just curled up against the pillows on the couch in our special cuddle spot, missing him, painfully.

FIV makes everything harder. Things other cats might easily weather can quickly spiral into life-threatening, chronic battles. If it had just been FIV alone, we would have fought it without hesitation—we’ve loved and cared for many FIV+ kitties. But when Panleukopenia hit, the battle became impossible for his depleted little body to win. His fever stubbornly loomed, and his white cell count refused to budge, stealing all hope. He hadn't accepted any food for four days at this point, and he only accepted a handful of treats for two days prior. Six days without proper nutrition — it's no wonder that his body wasn't recovering.

I stayed right beside him at the end. I held his head, letting his chin rest gently in the palm of my hand as it grew heavy from the medication. We made eye contact, and I stroked his body, kissed his sweet forehead, and spoke softly to him as he drifted away into peace.

I then nuzzled his neck, crying into his beautiful long black fur, and sobbed into it, “I will never forget you, baby. Never. Never. Never. Never. I love you so much.”

😣 Goodbyes are so impossibly hard. 😣
💢 Life can be so damn unfair. 💢

Right now, I am just waiting for the vet to call so I can bring his clay paw print home. 🐾

Rest easy, my sweet boy Daniel. You were so deeply, endlessly loved. 🐾💔🌈

🚨 EMERGENCY DRIVE: VACCINES & BIOSECURITY TO HALT OUTBREAK 🚨 📍 McKinley ARK — Fresno, CA

With Daniel confirmed positive for Panleukopenia, our window to protect the ~20 exposed indoor cats is measured in HOURS, not weeks.

The standard, lifesaving protocol right now is immediate herd immunity and hospital-grade decontamination.

We need to raise funds immediately for two specific, critical defenses:
FVRCP Booster Vaccines (Modified-Live): To vaccinate and booster every exposed, asymptomatic cat in the home to halt viral replication.
Veterinary-Grade Virucides & Cleaning Supplies: Standard household cleaners do not kill Panleukopenia. We need Rescue (accelerated hydrogen peroxide), concentrated bleach supplies, heavy-duty sprayers, disposable litter pans, and barrier gear to scrub down every inch of the living space.
Cost Breakdown:
$15–$25: Provides one rapid-acting MLV booster vaccine dose or a bag of Sub-Q fluids.
$40–$50: Buys a gallon of veterinary-grade virucidal disinfectant (Rescue) to decontaminate living spaces.
$100–$250: Directly offsets Daniel’s intensive inpatient care, lab work, and IV therapy at Cedar Veterinary Hospital.
$350: Fully vaccinates and protects the entire indoor group of ~20 cats.
$2,000: Covers Daniel's emergency hospitalization invoice in full.

If you have unopened bottles of Rescue disinfectant or access to low-cost MLV FVRCP vaccine stock locally, please send a direct message immediately.

🚨 CRITICAL RESCUE EMERGENCY: ACTIVE PANLEUKOPENIA OUTBREAK 🚨
📍 Fresno, CA | McKinley ARK Cat Rescue

We are facing an absolute worst-case scenario. 💔

Our sweet indoor rescue, Daniel, crashed severely and was rushed in for emergency veterinary care. He has officially tested POSITIVE for Feline Panleukopenia (FPV / feline distemper), in addition to testing positive for FIV. He is currently hospitalized at Cedar Veterinary Hospital fighting for his life, and his prognosis is critical.

Because two more of our indoor rescue cats have already started showing symptoms, Panleukopenia is now actively circulating through the 20 rescue cats inside our home. Some of our rescues have had outdoor privileges and interaction with our neighborhood feral/stray colonies (~40 community cats), putting the surrounding area at catastrophic risk if we cannot contain this immediately!

Because of my physical disability, I cannot physically provide the around-the-clock intensive nursing, IV/Sub-Q fluids, and decontamination required to manage an outbreak of this scale at home. As an independent rescuer on SSI without a 501(c)(3), the medical and quarantine costs are impossible for me to bear alone.

DESPERATELY NEEDED — COMMUNITY & FOUNDATION INTERVENTION:
🆘 Emergency Medical Boarding / Quarantine Placement (Highest Need): To safely isolate exposed cats from sick cats and break the transmission chain.
🆘 Medical Supplies & Diagnostics: Sub-Q fluids/lines, injectable Cerenia/antinausea, supportive broad-spectrum antibiotics to prevent secondary sepsis, and FVRCP booster vaccines / SNAP tests.
🆘 Rescue Backing & Financial Sponsorship: Direct support toward veterinary hospitalization and emergency care.

I am reaching out publicly to the local animal welfare community and asking for emergency guidance and resources.

Kirkland Foundation / Kirkland, if your team or network has any capacity, isolation space, partner clinic coordination, or medical support to help us halt this outbreak in Fresno, please reach out to us right away (I’ve also sent you an email) 🙏🐾

📩 How to Help: Please send a direct message (DM) to this page immediately if you can offer quarantine space, supplies, rescue coordination, or assistance.

For years, there have been videos circulating where people drag a fingernail over the tines of a comb, giggling at the cat’s reaction, from air-licking and weird expressions to sudden gagging.

It’s easy to see why these clips go viral. At first glance, it looks like a harmless, funny quirk. But if we take a moment to look at what’s actually happening behind the scenes, the reality is quite different.
Here is what is really going on when a cat reacts to that sound:

🔊 It's called High-Frequency Auditory Overload:
A cat’s ears can pick up ultrasonic frequencies far beyond what human ears can process. The sharp, rapid clicking of comb tines releases a burst of high-pitched sound waves that hit their auditory system like a physical shockwave.

🙀 Their response is due to Involuntary Neurological Reflexes:
That sudden gagging, retching, or frantic air-licking isn't a funny trick, it's an involuntary physical reaction. The brain and nervous system are struggling to handle the intense, uncomfortable frequency.

⚕️ The diagnosis is "FARS":
In veterinary medicine, extreme sensitivity to sharp, high-pitched noises (like comb tines, crinkling foil, or metal spoons) is linked to Feline Audiogenic Reflex Seizures (FARS). While some cats only experience mild nausea or distress, the sound can actually trigger full muscular spasms or seizures in more sensitive cats.

🎦 Most people who film or share these videos have no idea it causes discomfort.

We've all laughed at things before we learned the truth! But once we understand how sensitive their hearing really is, it's easy to choose better ways to interact with our furry family members.

Let's keep the combs for hair and stick to chin scratches, gentle brushings, and feather wands for our kitties instead. 🐾✨

Aug 2026 Nextdoor Food Drive

I’ve kept EVERY SINGLE ONE!

Yes, I have kept every single gift receipt I’ve gotten over the past 2 years since I first began requesting donations for these kitties. Every slip of paper is a memory of someone caring enough to help feed them.🙏🏻

You know how they say rescue is messy, beautiful, and slightly chaotic? Yeah. This photo is definitely that. 😓

I was actually on a mission tonight to photograph our whole stack (it should be nearly 50 strong by now!), but… well… this is all I could dig up right now! Eleven! They're mostly a mix of the very, very first ones from two years ago, and also a few from recent months.

Even with the rest of the pile playing hide-and-seek, seeing these 11 together still makes my heart so full. Every single one represents a real moment when one of you stepped up—hundreds of cans, dozens of bags of kibble, and full, happy bellies.

The need for food never stops, though, and I’m back for another food drive! If you’d like to help fill more bowls (and help me add another receipt to my chaotic stack! 🧡), you can send a gift directly from these Wishlists:

🚨Cat Food Needed!🚨
🙏🏻🆘🙏🏻

Meet our newest rescue! This sweet, incredibly sick void baby was brought to us July 06; emaciated, dehydrated, and with a severe URI. She is now safe, warm, and fighting hard, but she has a long road ahead, and my rescue resources are nearly gone; we DESPERATELY need wet and dry cat/kitten food.

Independent rescue relies entirely on the kindness of donors. To keep this kitten – and the many other local community colonies and indoor rescues I care for (~50 cats) – fed and stable, I'm asking for your help to feed them.

⚠️ URGENTLY SEEKING SPONSOR ⚠️

If you saw my post on the Nextdoor platform, you know the neighborhood colony has kept me on my toes lately (and that I’m still "accidentally" spilling a lot of food for them). But over here on FB, I want to talk about the bigger picture and the very real, very urgent situation we are facing right now.

Currently, I have two HEAVILY pregnant community mamas in the colony.

My ultimate goal for every single cat out here is always TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). It’s the only humane way to manage the population. But the brutal reality of independent rescue is that it’s a constant race against the clock and a massive financial strain. Sometimes, despite my best efforts, mamas get pregnant before I can get them to a clinic.

To be completely transparent, navigating the local TNR landscape has become incredibly difficult. Because of human politics and folly, Fresno TNR is no longer an avenue available to me. It’s incredibly frustrating when doors are closed to independent rescuers, because ultimately, it’s the innocent cats who suffer the consequences of human issues.

But I refuse to give up on these cats. I am pivoting and working to utilize alternative resources (like the Kirkland Foundation & the Hope Foundation) to get these cats the care they need.

In the meantime, these two pregnant girls are here, and they need immediate intervention. My hope is to get them into a clinic for emergency spay surgeries as quickly as possible. If it turns out that we miss our chance, they will require safe indoor medical holds, specialized nutrition, and care until everyone can be safely fixed and placed. If it comes to that, I will also urgently need to find a dedicated foster home capable of taking in a mama and her newborns, as my own indoor space is entirely at capacity. 🙏🏻

Either way, I cannot shoulder the medical and care costs for these two mamas alone.

I am looking for a dedicated sponsor for each of these two pregnant mamas. 🐈🐈

A sponsorship will directly cover their immediate medical needs, high-calorie nutrition, safe indoor sheltering, vet checks, and their surgeries so we can stop the cycle of overpopulation for them once and for all.

If you are in a position to sponsor a mama, or want to contribute toward their medical holds (even a few dollars can help!), please reach out to me directly via DM or use the links below. Alternatively, if you prefer to contribute directly to the facility that will handle the medical care for them, please contact me via DM so we can coordinate and arrange that with the clinic.

If you can’t help with monetary donations but still want to support the colonies (keeping ~sixty bellies happy takes a mountain of food) these Amazon & Walmart Wishlists are the quickest way to send food straight to their bowls:

Independent rescue takes more than just an individual, it truly takes a village, especially when the local system makes it harder instead of easier. Thank you all for seeing these 😻 cats, respecting their lives, and helping me keep them safe and fed.

Lots of Love,
Karrie & the Kitties
