We talk about using the place command as a helpful management tool for our dogs. We teach them to go to a specific spot and stay there until released, which can be useful during busy times, mealtimes, or when we can't keep a close eye on them. This helps manage the household and removes the option for unwanted behaviors. The dog, Bruno, has learned to put himself on the place, as he's realized he can't engage in certain problematic behaviors like jumping, counter surfing, or attacking other dogs. We discuss how this gives him a safe space and helps build trust in our leadership. We also note that some dogs, like Bruno, can be very charming and use that to try to get out of trouble, so we need to be aware of that and not let it undermine the training. We discuss how a dog's charming and manipulative behavior can be a survival skill learned on the streets, and how it's important to establish a clear hierarchy and leadership role to avoid conflicts over resources. The dog may try to charm its way out of situations, but the owner needs to be firm and consistent in their training to shift the hierarchy back in their favor. In this video, we discuss the dynamic between humans and domesticated dogs. We talk about the importance of establishing leadership and respect in the relationship, while also acknowledging the need to balance that with understanding the dog's natural instincts and desires. We explore how this can create a more harmonious and fulfilling life together, even with the occasional bumps in the road. In this video, I discuss the process of rehabilitating a dog that is struggling with certain behaviors. I explain how I use a structured approach, clear communication, and positive reinforcement to help the dog learn new, more appropriate responses. I emphasize the importance of taking on a leadership role and guiding the dog through challenging situations, rather than just letting the dog figure it out on its own. The goal is to build trust and help the dog develop the skills it needs to navigate social situations in a healthy way.
