Today we started integrating our new feathered family member, and finally have a name picked out! We appreciated everyones wonderful suggestions, and decided to name her Dax from Star Trek.

Her f***l came back negative for parasites, but then we had to wait for the heat wave to pass so that the temperature change from inside the house to outdoors wasnt too drastic. We also brought Summer outside again to enjoy his area!

So far everyone is doing great and getting along, with a few tussles as expected. During the day, Dax stays in a crate in Nutmegs area so they can safetly talk and get to know eachother, and at night Dax will be able to roost with her new crew. We'll continue this process until we feel comfortable that they've all worked out their hierarchy.

We had a great vet appointment yesterday for our new feathered family member!
He/she did so well, and we're just waiting for a f***l test result to come back clear and we can start integrating him/her into Nutmegs crew.

This visit was $110 and we're so grateful and appreciative that it was fully covered! It's honestly such a relief!

It's going to be another hot few days and we're ready with lots of fans and cool treats!

This heat has been kicking our butts but everyone is safe and settled in for the night. Tomorrow they're calling for 94 and Sunny all day... I'm very lucky to be working from home tomorrow so I can periodically check on everyone, provide cool snacks and spray everyone down.
We brought Summer inside because there's no way he would have been okay in this heat, even with all the fans and cool water pads I have for our feathered residents. The big pigs have a wallow and sun sails overhead to cool off, although they prefer to stay indoors. The littles have a small baby pool that they dont like and multiple fans. The sheep have multiple fans and access to a nice cool shaded pasture.
Even with all of that, days like this stress me out, especially for our more vulnerable babes like Teddy and our fosters Sunny, Jax, and Missy. Its constant "is this enough... I need to empty and refil troughs with cool water... are the fans going to start a fire... if one of the big kids goes into heat distress and I cant get them out of it, will they make the trip to the vet... is their breathing a little off...."
We'll make it through, but it's stressful. We hope everyone is staying safe and able to check on those most vulnerable in your lives!

The heatwave has started in our part of the Midwest!
Miley's PSA: don't leave your dogs in cars today, running or not, and make sure they have a nice cool place indoors to rest.
Hope's PSA: check on waters throughout the day, put out fans, and provide shade if there isn't any! Also set out bowls of water for wildlife.
We hope everyone stays safe this weekend.

🚨 New Rescue Alert! 🚨

We picked up this sweetheart last Friday from animal control after a suspected preditor attack left her wandering busy streets and severely injured. She's healing so well already and is a love!

She will spend the next month in quarantine in the house to rule out any illnesses or avian flu, and we have a vet appointment scheduled for her for next week.

This Fathers Day, we're celebrating Teddy! He's the father of Rosemary, Basil, Coco and Sugar, our 4 sheep babies who were born into sanctuary after Teddy and the girls moms were rescued.

Teddy came to us through an owner surrender and today is estimated to be around 11 or 12 years old. Before arriving at the sanctuary, we were told he spent time being used in a petting zoo. Given that, he’s very selective about who he interacts with, but if you’ve got a cookie in hand, you just might earn his approval!

Teddy is enjoying his golden years in safety and respect at Freedom Run, and we are managing his severe arthritis to make him comfortable as he grazes the pasture with his family, or naps in the barn after his favorite snack.

Visited today and met the most precious little rescue goats, pigs, turkeys and roosters! They have such a wonderful life, and I'm so happy to be able to spend time with such lovely humans and their sanctuary.
Thank you for having me out and for sending me home with goodies for the kids!
