Gus (floppy ears) & Greta (Prick Ears) are up for adoption and looking for a home together, within the state of Michigan, with an experienced German Shepard owner! Please read their entire bio below before submitting an application to adopt!
Gus and Greta wandered up the driveway of Pet Angel’s board members home right before thanksgiving and acted like they’ve lived there their whole lives. It was evident the pair were once wearing collars, but were not anymore. Our board member scanned them for microchips, and they were chipped! But upon further investigation, the microchips were not registered. In fact, they were completely scrubbed, and didn’t even show us which organization originally microchipped them. After a weekend of investigating, we were able to find their adoption post from an Animal Control in February, which led us to their names and their former owner. Upon investigating their former owners page, we saw they were trying to rehome the pair in October. We reached out, and at first, the former owner denied owning Gus & Greta. Then, they confessed that they could no longer care for Gus & Greta and asked us to rehome them. All this to say, it is evident that Gus and Greta were dumped near Frankenmuth by their former owner, and they scrubbed their microchips so the dogs could not be linked back to them. Other members of the community reached out reporting they had seen Gus and Greta wandering for at least 2 weeks before our board member had them, so the poor duo had been abandon and left to their own for quite a while. We reached out to the animal control they were originally adopted from and were able to get their medical history from them, but this animal control did not have space to take them back in. They were originally found by this animal control wandering together as strays, with no information on where they came from before that. So twice now, Gus and Greta have been left wandering on their own in the wild, which makes us so sad because they are big human lovers!! While we are a cat only rescue, we did not want to leave Gus and Greta without anywhere to go and we don’t want them to ever be wandering in the wild again, so we stepped up and are now their guardians and are taking the role of placing them into a FUREVER family very seriously.
Both Gus and Greta love people and are friendly lovers toward humans! From the moment they met our board member and her family, they wanted pets and to follow them around. Gus is especially fond of people and wants to give them his affection and attention. Greta likes it too, but Gus is the one who will steal your hand from petting her with a sneaky snout nudge. He loves to offer you his paws while being pet, while Greta likes to reach up to hug your neck with her front paws and give you face kisses. She likes to give attention before her breakfast, and Greta REALLY likes her food! So much that she will try to finish Gus’s food if he takes too long. Gus prefers to eat in the same room as Greta and doesn’t like to eat separately from her, but they need to have some distance between them because you know… she’ll finish her food first and then steal his food! Giving Gus his bowl first, followed by Greta a few feet away, gives him a bit of a head start. They are not free-feeders, as they’d eat all the food you give them, so they need to be on a feeding schedule.
Both Gus and Greta love squeaky balls SO much! Their favorite toy is the ChuckIt! Ultra Ball! Gus will even play fetch with himself with his squeaky ball! The two also enjoy bully sticks! However, both Gus and Greta should not be left unattended with destructible toys like toys with stuffing, tennis balls and toys made of non-durable materials, because they will destroy them pretty quickly and you do not want them to ingest any of these materials. Indestructible toys are the best option for them! Both Gus and Greta know the command “Sit” and can recall (although, we don’t recommend they are off leash in a non-fenced in area, due to their history of being left wandering twice before.) As we said before, both dogs love to be around people and will follow you ALL over the place! They really enjoy running outside, and love playing in the snow! As far as we can tell, the two are potty trained as long as they are regularly taken outside. Keep in mind, there will be an adjustment period as they get used to your schedule and you learn how often they need to be let out, but once you and Greta and Gus get into a rhythm with a potty schedule after they are home for a few weeks, they should have no issues (but give them grace during the introduction period into your home!)
Pet Angel’s Vet is an experienced German Shepard owner, and she recommended that we purchase Wisdom DNA Tests for both dogs. These tests will not only give us their exact ages and be able to tell us if the two are biologically related, but it will also tell us if Gus and Greta have any genetic conditions that may need extra care as they age. Our vet is suspicious that Greta is showing signs of Hip Dysplasia already. There are also other genetic conditions that German Shepard’s may have, and our vet also wants to make sure that we place them with a family who will be dedicated to their medical care to ensure they are never dumped, left wandering, or end up in a rescue again. We have already conducted the DNA test, but it can take up to 4 weeks for us to get the results back. We do not want to wait that long to find them a home, so we will move forward with an adoption prior to test results coming back and will share the results with the adopters once we get them. We are looking for an owner that will be dedicated to Gus and Greta regardless of the test results and give them any veterinary care they may need in the future if they do have any genetic conditions that require extra vet care. This is why we are looking for an owner that has experience with German Shepherds already.
Based off the veterinary history we were given from their previous animal control, Gus is estimated to be 3 years old and Greta is estimated to be 4 years old, however our vet guesses this may be incorrect and they may be slightly older. The DNA test we have done on the two will give us their exact age. The vet information we were given from their previous animal control states that Gus was suspected to have an allergy to fleas based off of patches of fur he was missing when they got him in January of 2025, so it is important he gets monthly flea prevention (he is currently not missing any fur, but he also does not have fleas and is on monthly flea prevention with us to ensure he doesn’t get those itchy bugs.)
Gus and Greta have met other large dogs (one adult female, one male puppy) through a proper dog introduction and had no issues. It is important to understand how to properly let dogs meet. First meetings should be made outside the home (at the meet and greet) on a leash. Watch for their body language and let them learn each other through sniffs. Then, all dogs should be taken on a walk together with the dogs at the same length together (no dogs infront of each other.) Between Gus and Greta, Greta is the alpha of the two.
Both Gus and Greta are fixed, microchipped (which we have re-registered and are now linked to Pet Angel) up to date on all their shots, and are receiving monthly heart guard and flea prevention. They are friendly with kids, but due to Greta’s jumping up to put her paws on your shoulders, should not be placed in a home with young children. Your children should also be familiar and comfortable around large dogs that like to give shoulder “hugs.” Our vet has recommended that Gus and Greta are not placed in a home with small dogs or cats.
We are dedicated to finding the perfect family for Gus and Greta, and applications are now open to apply for the bonded pair. Applications will be helped in order of the best fit for the duo so if you decide to submit an application, please take your time filling out your application and ensure all information is correct and filled out with detail, as it will help us determine the order of applications to consider. If your application passes the initial inspection, we will conduct a phone interview with you, and check both a personal and vet reference (and if you rent, a landlord check) before approving your application for a meet and greet. If your application for adoption is approved, we require everyone who lives in your home to come to the meet and greet with Gus and Greta prior to an adoption. This meet and greet will be held at the facility Gus & Greta are being housed at in Saginaw. We are not allowed to have dogs in our facility, as we are a cat only facility, so we cannot hold the meet and greet at Pet Angel. You and your entire family will meet Gus and Greta and get to spend some time with them. If you have other dogs, we also will do a meet and greet with your dogs and Gus & Greta at this meet and greet and go on a walk together for a proper doggie introduction. Expect the meet and greet to be at least an hour long if you don't have other dogs, or a hour and a half long if you have other dogs. After the meet and greet is over, we will send you home with a copy of the adoption contract to review and give you some time to think about Greta & Gus and make sure they are who you want to join your family.
Gus and Greta have not had the best luck with finding somebody who wants to keep them FOREVER, and we want to ensure that their next home is their forever home. We want to give you the time to really consider them, and ensure that you are going to keep them for the rest of their lives. If you think you are the owner these two are begging for, please read our adoption procedure and submit an application online at: https://forms.gle/2yCjictaaAptaYd86
Keep an eye on your email inbox after submission. If your application is denied, we will email you.
