Did you know only 22% of the flowers in the US are grown here? That means roughly 80% of blooms are imported! Most of these flowers spend more time traveling to you than they spend in your vase.
When an imported flower is cut, say in places like Columbia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, or Kenya, they get boxed up without water, tucked into cargo ships and jets, and transported across the world. Chemicals are often applied to these blooms to prevent pests and critters from entering the destination country too! NIH research has found there is not only risk of exposure to, āa very high number of toxic chemicals [but also] rather high concentration levels,ā when touching these flowers. Not great for people growing these flowers and not great for you! Once they arrive, these blooms are sent to wholesalers and eventually to the grocery store where you purchase them. All of that travel time can add up to a week without water. And we wonder why these blooms only last a day or two in your vase!
Local flowers are often grown using regenerative or organic growing practices, boast long vase life, and support your local community. Whatās not to love!
